Hey guys,

My family is insisting to me that I should go see a doctor, but I'm unsure just think its a passing pain. Here is all the details.

At about 8pm I started having serious pains (around heart area) and shortness of breath. This lasted for about 30 min, until it started improving. The pains soon subsided but the shortness of breath didn't fully stop but was bearable. Fast forward 2 hours (about 10:30pm) and the chest pains and shortness of breath returned but this time it included a pain in my shoulder (thats when my family started freaking). While writing this, the pains are all gone except I can only breath half breaths without feeling a lot of discomfort.

Just some background info, I am 20 years old (as of 22 hours ago... some birthday present God) and moderately fit.

As I said before, its probably nothing, but you can never be too safe with your life. However, if I don't respond tomorrow, you will know why.

I doubt it's angina, you seem much too young for heart problems but it could be something equally as serious.

I'd say yes, go to the doctor/hospital as soon as possible even if just to get it checked out.

Also, if it IS your heart, the longer you wait the more damage will be done to the muscle and... well, that's not going to be pretty ;)

So yes, doctor? GO GO GO GO GO!

Oh, and P.S. I'll totally wet myself if you get to the hospital only to discover it's a particularly feisty wind :D

Don't be a retard and go to the Doc.....if you're fine then it's been a minor inconvenience....it's it's something serious then it may save your life, so the lesson here is don't be a retard and go to the Doc :)

Exactly!

Thanks for saying it much better than I could :o

Could also be a pulmonary disorder...

Wait until you feel your heart skipping beats! That's always fun :D

Just go to the doctor/hospital and be certain. Listen to Zenbaas!

Thanks for the swift response! Do you think its serious enough for me to consider seeking out a doctor at this time? Or just go first thing tomorrow?

Yeah, I have admitted defeat, but now its a matter of when.

If I were you, I'd be at the hospital right now describing the pain and symptoms.

They'll probably check your pulse, blood-pressure and ask you to breathe while they plop a stethoscope on you. They might also strap you to an ECG just to be absolutely certain.

In other words it'll be about 30-minutes of your time and about R500 out of your pocket for dragging an on-standby doctor (who's on standby for EXACTLY these sort of reasons) to make sure you'll live :p

Just go and get it over with then let us know the verdict when you get back!

Your family will be happy to know you're okay and you won't have to worry any more either :p

Thanks for the advice, I am heading there right now (Ones just down the road after all). Will post the results when I get back.

Snazzy!

/beams @ Zenbaas -- We might have just saved someone's life.

Worst case, we've given a doctor the rare opportunity to tell someone that they're perfectly healthy :D

If all else fails, Nicko has an amusing story to tell later on about how he got bored and lonely one Friday night and popped over to the local hospital and paid a doctor for some physical contact :D

@ Nicko -- think of it as an adventure :)

Oh, and good luck! Wishing you the best!

if it was heart related you would probably be dead by now, and usually chest pains are not something to be ignored, though most chest pains are caused by various stomach issues, hernias, acid reflux (gerd), gas and whatnot, but as said, not that wise to ignore chest pains if you haven't had a history of them.

if you have medical aid then pop into your emergency and let them run an ECG on you, no harm in that.

You will probably have one of these:

Either way, hope it passes, I get severe chess pains so I know how scary it can be

Good. Even if it's not for your own sake at least your family will also feel better. It can honestly be quite a few things but the chest pain coupled with the shortness of breath sounds like something worth nothing. Let us know what they have to say.
Lycanthrope: All I can do is lol :D Your heart isn't something to be trifled with :)

Ja and there is always interesting things going on in the trauma area, so at least you'll be entertained otherwise...! :p

My mom has had two bypass surgeries in her life and gets angina frequently. Although she's on a cocktail of medication. But yeah, she's been lucky, she's only had one heart attack and fortunately there was no damage done to the heart.

She also has a hiatal hernia so yes, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is part of the package, so she gets odd pains too.

I get premature ventricular contractions once in a while. You realise how accustomed you are to your heart's beating when it pauses :D You learn to love your heartbeat after that and also how valuable (psychologically) and comforting it is to know that there's nothing really wrong with you. So yeah, by all means, get it diagnosed and make sure you're fine if you have a concern.

Urgh... Trauma/casualty room/emergency room/whatever you want to call it... There's the number one way of making you realise that there's always someone worse off than you

Agree with Zenbaas, don't be a retard, glad you went, you are never too young to have heart issues, it is perhaps just more unlikely.

Hope your ok and let us know.

Just over an hour is not so bad, the trauma rooms can be a nightmare, paper work etc etc, stay positive :p

True. In that case let's hope he hasn't seen anything too grisly :/

Also, each time I see your post and, peripherally, your avatar, I think it's Occie who's posted. I think he uses the same one :p

Damnit, we need customisable avatars, stat! :D

Hospital is just down the road and you don't go??

btw it could always be a heart defect or something. It's funny how such stuff can be picked up and detected early on but guys generally go to doctors lesser let alone full checkups, thus are likely to only notice when the problem is far gone.

Lol yep these avatars do get a bit confusing, we need custom now!!!

I would pass out in a trauma room quick sticks!
