Should I sell my Sony PS4?

Alas I'm a thinking gamer, and there aren't many games made for this small breed.

Run and gun, kick and hit, hack and slash ... that's all good and well.

When you're looking for a game with real character development and rich environments to truly explore, then you'll understand why the whole PS ecosystem is mostly lacking (Rockstar games an exception).

I hate linear gameplay where the whole concept is sending you in as one agent against an entire army, and by your 2000th headshot you get a bigger gun.

Bioshock was also good for explorarion (the first one), and the Mafia games, but I'm thinking I just need to pack console gaming away until true virtual reality arrives.
 
I never really used my consoles much in the last while, but when I got the witcher 3 my PS4 has been running on overdrive. I still have unopened copies of The Last of Us and Shadow of Mordor etc, so I think you really just need to find the right game to make you fall in love again.

Haha shoosh! I had a NES, xbox, xbox360, ps3, ps4. Missed out on the golden years of Sega Megadrive and PS1, but I was poor. I would love to get back into PC gaming but buying a rig now is a bit of a schlepp since I'm almost never home.

I played the crap out of games like skyrim, Mass Effect 1-3, Fable, Forza, Dirt on console.

My 80/80Mbps uncapped fiber is also collecting dust most weeks. :o

I honestly don't know how you come to this conclusion...I suspect you aren't looking hard enough and this same problem will happen to you on any platform.

Playstation has 90% the same content as Xbox and PC at any given point in time.

Maybe now is just not the right time for you?

Witcher 3? Far Cry 4? Dragon Age Inquisition?


And I hate to blow your bubble, but the first and probably second wave of VR games aren't going to be all that.

I reached that conclusion about PS specifically because that's the environment I've been in for the past while. I had an Xbox360 before the PS3, but never really built up a big library there.

From the outset I'm happy to believe I'm the weak link in this equation ... I'm just demanding too much from games. You get used to a certain level of intellectual stimulation from reading books or watching movies, and to me console games have always felt like they can simulate those fictional worlds but you always end up getting frustrated by their limitations (whereas your imagination is limitless).

Who here hasn't gotten annoyed when you wanted to open a door that was just painted onto a wall, or wanted to pick up something that couldn't be picked up, or got frustrated at having a trusty companion who only had four lines of preset dialogue?

On the PS4 I've now played Grand Theft Auto V (which would have been awesome if I hadn't already played it out on PS3 at launch); Call of Duty: Ghosts (beautiful sets but still just essentially a run-and-gun) and Infamous: Second Son (waaaay too repetitive formula of clearing increasingly more difficult zones). Nothing else has really caught my attention, and yeah that's probably just me.

*shrugs* And ok, gonna give up on my dreams of VR revivals based on the feedback here. Think I'll just sell it.

Yeah you really haven't chosen the best games to play if you didn't want linearity. GTA excluded which is brilliant, and I hate sandbox games, but as you say already done that.

Ghosts is rubbish by all standards, not just yours.

Second Son was okay, but nothing amazing.

You should have a go at The Last of Us. It's linear, but it solves the imagination problem somewhat through superb storytelling.

Sounds to me like you need a BIG game like Witcher 3 that offers you almost infinite options and engages you endlessly.

Played the Last of Us on PS3. Powerful ending true, but all that skulking away from big monsters genuinely scared the bejeebers out of me. To play that on PS4's amped up realism, hell no rofl!

Will check out Witcher 3, thanks for the suggestion.

Bro... The Witcher 3 is THE game. Even if you haven't been a fan of the series it's beyond solid...and CD PRoject Red has always been a stellar company. You can find tons of videos on youtube that will bring you up to speed about the story, but it's honestly the best console game I've played bar none. I played around 100hrs each on Mass Effect 1,2,3 and skyrim but witcher is going to knock that out the park. (NES games from my childhood don't count. Excite bike for lyfe!)
 
In a similar boat, but for pc. The wait for "AAA" titles that interests me is few and far between. not even in the mood to upgrade my gpu or anything else...

I'm in the same boat as you, probably the reason I have held back on getting the PS4.

I'll wait for the price drop and TLOU 2 and Uncharted 4. The rest of the games I'll get on pc. Obviously there will be a few other exclusives and I might get games like the Witcher on PS4 just because my pc will struggle and I'll have to choose between a Pc upgrade and PS4
 
I found myself in the same boat as you OP - but with my Xbone.
In fact, we got back from holiday a few weeks back, and the console never left the bag it was transported in.

Been playing ARK on my PC on a R9 280X until this dude on Carb threw up a trade ad. Xbone for his GTX970. So I traded and got a nice FPS boost.

Will buy another Xbone when BLOPS3 comes out. Or a PS4. Depends on which direction the clan is going - considering competitive COD is PS4 now. Will see...
