Hi Guys,

I currently have the Openweb 4mg uncapped gold account, for the first 5 months that I had it, it was outstanding. I used to download at full speed day and night. There has been shaping recently on this account, I get around 200kbps
download during the day and then around 6pm is when the floodgates open up.

I mean, doesn't the after hours package work the same way. I pay the extra $$$ so I can get a decent download speed. I really am considering changing service providers. I was looking at Telkom, does anyone have any feedback on them?

Streaming youtube on HD after hours on Opnweb buffers alot, not sure if it supposed to do that.

The after hours accounts are limited to 192Kbps during the day (about 20KB/s).

Have you contacted OW support or messaged MrBeep on the forums here yet about this? If you have gone through all these channels then why not try a different provider? You can always come back to OW if you are not satisfied after the move.

Thanks DrJohnZoidberg for the reply. I have emailed Mr Beep about the problem and he said that there is shaping and getting half my download speed during peak hours is great speed.

I do want to try another service provider, I was thinking about Telkom and wanted some feedback from the guys that are with telkom.

Thanks again.

I think you have unrealistic expectations.

Any other ISP during the day is even worse.

You are on a home account, and looking at other home accounts. The reason they are so cheap is because they are designed for the average person that works during the day, then goes home at night to use the net.

If you want full speed during the day you need a business account or an unshaped account.

Mr.Beep is right. For a home account 200kps is great during the day as no home account is designed for day time use.

Hi Qwikslvr,

Thanks for the input, I am open to criticism be it negative or positive.
I just find it a bit strange that 5 months ago I was able to download at full speed day and night and recently its been shaped.

I was looking at the gold unshaped account about two weeks ago on the openweb site but I don't see it there anymore.
Not sure if this package has been removed.

I do work during the day Qwikslvr, its just that someday's my job allows me to finish work earlier than normal, those are the days that I typically stream of Youtube and it buffers badly.

Thanks for the input again, much appreciated.

Nah it's cool.

Just warning you that the other ISPs are worse when it comes to day time stuff.

I also can't find their Gold on their website.

I'll email him.

Okay, I have also emailed Mr Beep and his exact words were "Yes, im afraid we no longer sell this version. We are busy developing a new produict which will release soon".

Although i couldn't forgive the spelling error, lol...just joking...(product)
Will wait to see what Mr Beep has up his sleeve, I really hope that it is affordable though, my ADSL is costing me an arm and a leg...

I have only really been with one ISP ie. Openweb, so i just wanted to find out about ISP's and their services...

So far, I haven't heard any good things about other ISP's when it comes to uncapped...

If you need full speed 24/7 then you will have to cough up for a business uncapped account.

Please stop spreading incorrect lies.

Telkom uncapped account are full speed 24x7 until you get their threshold of around 350-400 on a 4Mb, only then do you get shaped at some hours.

Intresting. Not, that I want to hijack but what do these threshold values look like on 1 and 2mb if I may ask?

Thanks

I agree, most ISP's are terrible during the day, and Im assuming the reason you used to get full speed during the day was only because that had capacity to give it to you. In my experience, Iv never been with an ISP that passes on additional capacity to the customer as OW does. But, it won't hurt to look aound.

Go look at the Telkom uncapped thread in the ISP section, I think it's around 130Gb for 1Mb and 250Gb for 2Mb.

Last month I hit 230GB on TI 4MB uncapped and it put me in the "orange" status, nothing changed - a little slower sometimes but I'm not sure if it was related. I work from home and use it all day and use Netflix most evenings.

No complaints with TI for the past 2.5 months it's been great.

I've tried them all, nothing against OW but TI has no issues and costs significantly less than OW "Gold".

If I was paying R640 for 4mb data only product I wouldn't expect to be shaped during the day tbh - home or not

+1

I had to cancel my ADSL while away in JHB on a project as no1 would be using it. I got back and thought what the heck let me try TI for a month, needless to say it's now my 3rd month with TI. All it took was one 15min phone call and I was up and running.

I'm on a 2MB line and last month I downloaded just over 200GB's and I didn't experience any throttling or shaping. I swear I get 200-210kbps on well seeded torrents regardless of what time it is. I tried many different ISP's and not one of them performed like this during business hours. I dont think TI even shapes their accounts, I think they just wait till you hit Power User and then manage you.

I use XBMC (with Fusion Installer) and Hulu alot and they perform flawlessy on TI.

OW, Plugg and Buzybuy would be the next closest daytime performers (maybe because they all IS accounts), when I was testing them out I would get roughly 50% of my line speed during daytime downloads.

I'd advise you to give TI a spin for a month, what have you got to lose..

Thanks for the feedback guys, that's exactly what I was looking for...
As for the gold package, I just think that paying as much as I am, there shouldn't be any shaping at all...
I very rarely ever hit the 300GB pm usage but still get shaped...
I just think its a bit unfair is all...
Will definately look at TI, thanks guys
