We have just passed the 7 year mark and the next only expected end 2013 somewhere. That makes it 8 years. Expect perhaps another year of games etc... before forced to upgrade to the new console.
The warranty is a year but they have an excellent exchange program.
I have had 2 of my earlier Xboxes (got 5) red ring on me way after the warranty expired. I took them into MiDigital in Edenvale (called Powercare now AFAIK) . Paid R600 and they exchanged for a brand new consoles. My 2 Elites and my Slim have never given me any problems. Was just the early Pro's that had issues.
EDIT: I was a hardcore PC gamer up until MW2 came out. I switched to console and love it. No upgrades every 6 months to keep up with latest games. No driver hell. All simple plug and play.
I still play RTS on PC though. Tried C&C on Xbox and found it clumsy.

Consoles generally have a 10 year cycle. I've had my Xbox since 2006 amd my ps3 since 2008 the price dropped a lot in two years amd had pretty much remained the same since then. PS2 had games being released till 2010

apologies, should have clarified, a single xbox or ps3 will not last 7 or 8 years.
and graphics? they say PC delivers the best graphics out there.

Yes, PC does have better graphics after the console has aged a bit. Console is generally on par at release.
You have to upgrade your PC gfx card every once in a while to keep up with latest games though. Painful.
Up until Modern Warfare 3 I used to buy COD games on both platforms. Difference was not that big that I got envious.
I also stopped playing the PC versions as the online community is not as good as XBox.
My Elites and Slim have had no problems. Got them at launch. So you do get some pretty good life from them. They get used every single day too.
When buying new games, I so enjoy not having to check specs on the box anymore

PC always will deliver the best gfx. Cause pc gets a new gfx card every 6 months.Where console gets upgraded every 5-8 years. The thing is you can't compare the 2 cause a proper pc will always cost more then a console.In the end of the day I'd say it depends on how much money you have to spend if you have like 15k- 20k to spend get a pc otherwise your probably better off with a console.But I still think comparing a pc with a console is stupid cause of the price difference between a proper pc and a console.
You don't need a 15-20k PC to game with, you sound like one of those verimark adverts that over exaggerate everything
Most people already have a monitor and some other components they can use from their existing PCs. You can go buy a i7 3770k, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD ready built box for R5500 (i5 3570k with same specs for R4500), slap in a GPU ranging from R2k to R5k and you will have a pretty decent gaming system.
And it doesn't require you to buy lcd tv
Xbox and Playstation games are overpriced.
Usually about R200 more or say then the new pc version.
The other day at the shop i saw console games going new for R650.
New games on steam go for $50 there about and there are many specials.
The new xbox and playstation's GPU is going to be (power wize) in the upper midrange of current offerings. It's not going to be game changer like it was in 2006.
Anyway
1. Built pc (mini itx, atx or what you have space for)
2. Add wireless "n" network adapter or wired lan line.
3. Install Steam or whatever
4. Buy Xbox 360 controller (work with steam)

Just remember why that is though - there's so many royalties to pay to Microsoft and Sony and the Blu-Ray consortium that often it isn't even viable to release updates to a game. That's why Minecraft wasn't re-certified after its first major update on Xbox Live, it just cost too much to do it. RRPs are also strictly enforced by suppliers and the publishers themselves to ensure an even playing field. Buying a console negates the need for any hardware upgrades, but if you factor in the cost of the games on both platforms along with hardware upgrades to a PC, you end up spending about the same over the course of two or more years, even longer than that if you purchase games from the bargain bin on the PC platform.
