Should I Upgrade to Win7 Ultimate?

Ok I have been using Xp pro SP3 on my PC becuase I don't think she can handle win7, But I'm seriously get over XP's shyte.

my Specs are:
2.8 Ghz Celeron D OC'ed to 3.2Ghz
2Gb DDR2 800
250Gb Seagate Sata2 Barracuda

I'm a big gamer so I'm really concerned with speed, should I upgrade to Win7? (would be Ultimate)
 
Ya it works brilliantly, even on my old PC - P4 2.0ghz 768mb RAM & Geforce 5200. Just note you cannot upgrade from XP, it will have to be a clean install.

Windows 7 is great, everything works out of the box.
 
should work fine...

I'm running win7 ultimate on a celeron 1.6 lappie with onboard gfx and it chugs along happily
my gaming rig (quad core) also has 2GB of RAM, and handles 7 ultimate very well
 
oh ja I meant format and install, just don't want my game performance to take a hit, thats the big thing for me
 
Windows 7 is great I hope you are not going to pay full price for Ultimate (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

As always just be careful of older games, maybe do a google search first on the games you want to play to make sure they are compatible with windows 7, I have a few old games that don't want to work without a bit of convincing.

What about that XP compatibility thingy? how well does it work? and has there been a Service Pack?
 
There have been no service packs yet. Plenty of updates though. The XP mode is basically Windows XP in a VM, so I would recommend 2gb RAM and a fast CPU for that. It'll run on your PC though, but slowly. Almost all apps that work on XP work on 7 though. (Office 2003 doesn't though AFAIK)

I felt the same as you, but you get used to it and it actually is a vast improvement. It does take a while though.

Yep. Well I'm a Mac fanboi, OS X and iWork FTW! Maybe you can still hackintosh that sucker.

It will take a hit on those specs imo. Esp w/ the Celeron. 7-10% on fps imo.

Remember that on raw numbers win7 & vista are about the same on most benchmarks. They just fixed the GUI to make it feel less sluggish.

Worth a trial run though imo.

Nothing you can do about that, just format & re-install every 6 months. My current XP install has become dog slow, takes minutes to boot up and for the desktop to become responsive. No, I do not install all kinds of crap on it as I only use it for CSS. If it wasn't for CSS I would have deleted the xp partition a long time ago. Hopefully CSS is available on OS X soon and I'll go the hackintosh route.

Miss the part where I'm a gamer? ;) we PC gamers already wait long enough for PC Ports, don't want to wait another year for a mac port.....

Ja I know but I'm getting tired of doing that, apparently Win7 doesn't slow down like a fat wife so much :P
 
oh one more question, I got my HDD partitioned into 2 parts, do if have to format both? (both NFTS)

Both should be formatted to either exFAT or NTFS. If there are any FAT32 partitions they can be converted to NTFS in Win 7 but backing up your data is recommended before doing such.
 
Unless you have a specific reason for splitting it you could just wipe the partition and combine them.

You must format the partition on which the OS is being installed, the other one you can leave if you like. A complete new start might not be a bad idea though.

Why on earth would he want to format his hdd with exfat?
