Hi Guys,

I have 2x 8800GTX's running in SLI. I have the Asus II Formula board. Should I upgrade to a HD4870? Obviously I won't be able to CF it later on, but my GTX's aren't worth that much anymore... :(

Ummm surely your 2 8800gtx's will romp the 4870, so why would you want to change, i could understand if you wanted to change to a 4870x2 but not a single 4870.

I'm pretty sure you can run everything on full yes? so whats the point? Just my opinion :)

I was never a fan of running dual cards and I can't afford the 4870x2. So...

The reason for thinking of the upgrade/downgrade. Since I have been running this setup, I have had a lot of issues with the Nvidia drivers and I have updated to the latest, think 177.15, the one with physics support, and still have the same problems...

what problems are they ..... maybe the chaps here could sort out whatever it is and you can go back to the pleasure that is dual 8800GTX's no?

BSOD. one of the nv***.dll's.

Scenario: Start DL at 12 o clock when I go to bed. Leave it on till the next day I get home. Bubbles screen saver is being used. I stop the DL's and start Crysis and play for 5min and get a BSOD. I have disabled the screen saver, so, it happens less, but it does still happen.

And, No, I am not dl-ing p0rn... :)

Aren't your SLI 8800GTX setup faster than a single 4870? Perhaps your problems aren't nVidia driver specific but perhaps OS related in the sense that you might get away with a clean reinstall? I remember the good old days when it used to work :-)

Try that before downgrading your setup! You never know...

try another driver? I had an issue with some or other one a while ago and just reverting back to another, more stable one fixed the crashes.

1x 4870 is a lot faster than 1x 8800GTX, but obviously 2x 8800GTX's is faster...

All that WU's, Lost :(

Try reinstalling your OS and see what happens... SP1 will sort out most of the WU's for you... :-)

ok so explain in much more detail all the errors/crashes/whatever you've been experiencing ........ just makes it easier to identify exactly what is going on.

LOL. From that first line I knew you were using vista.

Ha Ha.

Sorry. No help here.

Try only running one card.

Or upgrade to xp.

Going to XP isn't an upgrade. I LOVE VISTA and I am using the 64bit one. It is a bit difficult to use only the one card as they are part of my water cooling loop.

@ Mephisto_Helix, The BSOD I get when I follow the scenario that I gave you. The other error I get, and I get that a lot, is something like "The Nvidia driver has stopped reponding" and then I have to press the restart button, cause once I get that, it doesn't really recover, cause it recovers and then I get the same error and it goes into a "loop"...

and that is when I am playing warcraft online and have gtalk open and the pc has been running for 3+ days.

Maybe I should just do the reinstall... :( It's been a while anyways.

when you google those probs, the results mostly point to it being a Vista issue ......... :o

Another vote here for a fresh install of your OS. Fresh drivers for everything..

Must say that I only experienced these problems since running SLI and Vista 64bit. In the past I had only one and was running Vista 32bit. I will format soon and let you guys know if it worked or not. I hope it does... :)

Besides that, you guys think it is stupid to upgrade to a 4870. Maybe some1 with a 4870 must pm me and we can do tests and post the results. :D
