...For Ivy Bridge or get Sandy Bridge now?Budget is around 15k-17k and must include the following:

Case
HDD and SSD
CPU
RAM
PSU
GPU(maybe 2)
Screen(lcd or led and 24"/27")
Keyboard and mouse
CPU Cooler
Motherboard

The PC is mostly going to be used as for gaming.

Pada,Archer,Killadoob and Postmanpot...Your input is most welcome.

I assume your signature has something to do with this build? If you don't have a computer at all at the moment, I'd say go for it, otherwise wait for Ivy.

Mostly gaming = Sandy Bridge now. Ivy Bridge should work on current SB mobos anyway, its just a 22nm process and is only coming out around March
Unless you meant to ask about LGA2011 / Sandy Bridge E that is launching in November? Which I'd still avoid, since that has a lot of workstation type features that will inflate the price. You will also not get large performance gains at the same price points as current SB CPUs

Long story short, just get a 2600k now (seeing how you have a large budget). Will update with actual components in a bit

Case - CM690ii as the cheap option, HAF X as the more expensive
HDD and SSD - 2TB of any make, 120GB OCZ Vertex. Could drop the SSD to 60GB, or the Agility version to save some cash
CPU - 2600k, can drop to 2500k to save R1000 if needed in other areas
RAM - 8GB DDR3 1600mhz, 1.5V. Corsair, GSkill, Kingston
PSU - Something in the 750W range just in case you want dual GPU later. Corsair
GPU - HD6970 or GTX580. Dual option is 2 x HD6870. The dual option is the fastest by far, but you may need to fiddle with xfire settings once in a while
Screen - not my area of expertise, reserve R3k for this
Keyboard and mouse - your choice, can be anything from R200 - 2000. Choose this last with left over cash (I used R1000 for the calcs)
CPU Cooler - Cogage True
Motherboard - Z68 or P67 mobo to suit, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte. Anything from R1500 - R3000 (used R2000 for calcs, many good Asus boards in this range)

So thats about R17.5k with the 2600k. So I'd rather recommend the 2500k with a nice OC instead, giving you some savings to spend on a nice screen, keyboard, mouse

You can get a K/B, display and mouse for R1000? Wow. :P By the way, why is the 2600K more expensive now than when it launched? Surely the price should have gone down, exchange rates are better than they were then, chip has been out for a while and there are no more shortages..

Dollar/Rand exchange rate went south. And the R1000 savings is to add to what I already allocated (R3000 + R1000 +R1000 savings). Or can a person not get a keyboard, mouse + screen for R5000?

Ah, I though you just meant by going with the 2500k over the 2600k. My bad. Main difference being the 2500K doesn't have hyper-threading. Whether that's worth a thousand Rand is the question.

The displays are a bit difficult right now it seems, I'd say go for a Samsung BX2450 but apparently they are really hard to get now. Great screen for R2500 though, and the stand takes very little space on your desk. Or get a big-ass 32" TV, some are really cheaper than PC displays, mostly because of government sticking their grubby fingers in again. You can get a certain Samsung for like R3500. The IPS panels are much better than what you get in cheaper monitors.

There will always be those telling you to wait, but let me explain why you should never listen to them...

They tell you to hold off the current tech as better tech is along the way (which sounds right), but as soon as the new better tech hits the shelves, new better tech is announced to come out a year or 2 later and all these guys who said wait will tell you to wait again (and thus the cycle continues).

The bridge these days isn't so big, you can run latest games on old 775 systems. So buy what is currently available. If you feel the need to upgrade when Ivy is released, just sell what needs to be replaced, add some cash and get the new (which won't even be necessary)

good advice

The only thing rob is that the new tech is not a year away, it's a couple months.

I would wait for both gpu and cpu but since you have no system you should buy now. You should only wait for new tech if you have the system that can hold you until it comes along. Like grimspoon the other day had a system very capable of going for another 6-12 months easily. You don't seem to have any system so waiting is wrong.

I got burnt with core2, people said wait and i followed rob's logic and never waited and bought a 2k 3800x2 two months later core2 dropped and i was kicking myself because i could have held on for a couple months. From that day i swore it would never happen again.

Now if i had not had a system i would not have been kicking myself but the fact is i could have held on and i ended buying core2 and the 2k amd cpu was worth about 1/4 of the price i paid because core2 demolished it.

I think I waited long enough...Now on gpu's AMD x-fire or SLI w.r.t stability?

Go for it dude, well i am not sure about sli but crossfire is freakin awesome. Depends what you plan on getting as to whether it worth buying a bigger card or running 2 :D. I have heard the 5 series nvidia sli is almost 100% same as crossfire but i know crossifre is somewhere aorund double, not exactly double but darn close.

Not all cards scale the same. The lesser cards tend to do better in terms of xfire

The 6950 seems to crossfire remarkably well. Closer to double the FPS, sometimes more .

Close to double here as well

Check out the 6990 crossfire

570 is almost close to 100%. Remarkable how amazing these cards in sli and crossfire have become. You are basically doubling the performance now or getting damn close to it.

560 not double but close it.

Wow guru is an amazing website. They have practically every single gpu review. 560 sli must be the best on budget way to go. Faster than a 580 and about 4.5k in total maybe less. 2 560's in sli and your sorted i reckon, same price as a 6970 and it gives the 6970 a proper hiding.

I am in the same boat and I am waiting. Really no rush. I would rather buy at the beginning of a product ranges life cycle than towards the end. If you can, wait.

Part of the reason I went with the 560ti was because of the superb scaling in SLI. I don't need it yet, to be honest, as it runs everything smoothly anyway, for the time being. Maybe I'll add another one when I upgrade to Ivy. Then again, I'll be wanting a SSD with that rig as well... it's starting to turn into a pricey upgrade!
