If Multichoice sets up a 2 year contract, which you cannot default on, then they should carry at least an equivalent of what you signed up for.

I am seriously considering cancelling my subscription because there so so little suitable material to watch for the premium price I pay every month.

There is an open marketplace - if you want to broadcast it, you must outbid the competition. DSTV are NOT a monopoly, and are just a business with shareholders - all of whom expect a return on their investment just like everyone else. E tv just want to ride on DSTV coattails for free. Just because you think a DSTV subscription is a rip off does not make it so. If e tv had their own broadcast mechanism would you pay ANYTHING for it?? Personally I would like to select the DSTV channel package that I DO watch, and not cross subsidise the losers like e tv, russia tv, ethnic tv, music channels and local content programs.

True. Nor is your belief that they're not a monopoly make that so.

BUT.... our grabbamint thinks they can do what they want and are terribly shortsighted, so... no real solution currently, just like many other issues in this lost-the-plot nation.
 
I don't care, DSTV is just a lot of bull. Not interested in DSTV, I subscribe to oversea's channels, not a repeat of everything like DSTV and then you must pay a lot of money for it.

Still say they are a monopoly. The only broadcasting that I can subscribe to if I want to. I can't get any sport or decent movies on any other broadcasting medium except for streaming which I can't do or do for everything.
 
If Multichoice has a monopoly over the market then it makes sense for them to be force ‍♂️

Multichoice are clearly a monopoly, the literal textbook definition. Survey any sample of the South Africa population and they won't be able to name a Multichoice competitor with as wide a reach as they have.
 
Most of the etv channels are available free-to-air. Just install an aerial and plug it in to your digital receiver (either built into most of the better current TVs, or get a cheap (free if you are an indigent) set-top box. Problem solved.

After doing that, can that DStv subscription

Problem for many is recording the eTV movie chs., which DStv makes it easier to do (at a price unfortunately). Even on satellite OpenViewHD the few built-in recording options are clumsy at best.
 
Yes and now if we can force them to show new programming & stop running channels with 98% repeats that would be great also.
 
Might be something in the "shortage of channels" story after all; one of their latest extras, for Namibia, has now been suspended and another expected, for Zambia, hasn't arrived..

The free-to-air TV's and set-top boxes record straight to an external hard disk. You can even set up schedules. Not clunky at all. No need for a satellite decoder...

I've worked with this.
Quality DVB-T2 STBs possibly, but these eMovie fans usually couldn't afford anything fancy and don't want to drop their smaller DStv package.
 
This is a South African issue we are talking about where everybody gets forced to do things according to the African National Congress's rules and regulations (Socialism), correct?

Things like the more affluent needing to pay all sorts of taxes while certain other individuals work strictly cash based and hide it under their mattresses to evade tax and get away with it due to a total lack of "policing" on them.

An interesting definition, exactly where SA is heading, and at a snowball effect. The bigger it get, the faster it travels until its final destruction if and when it should collide into something much bigger than it. :-|
