Should voting be compulsory?

Suggestion for voting day. If you're going to vote, you get a paid public holiday. If you're not going to vote, you go to work as normal. Should be easy to prove you've voted the next day.

Upside would be, you might get a few more people to vote or the economy takes less of a beating with another public holiday for all.

....... i know people who are white and know Malema personally, and like the guy.

There is no accounting for idiotic people - no matter what their colour!

It just amazes me how in this day and age, people just couldn't give a damn. Especially in SA, rather let someone else do it and then we can bitch and moan later when things are a screw up

As opposed to voting, not getting your candidate voted in and THEN bitching and moaning  ... so basically you just advocate EARNING the right to bitch and moan .... does that making your bitching and moaning more effective?

Compulsory Voting is not democratic, but if you don't vote you have no right to complain,
so the people proudly posting that they didn't vote, remember that next time you are bitching in CA.

if you don't vote you have no right to complain

This is becoming something of an urban myth.

If I choose not to vote ( which I did not do ) why should that prevent me from complaining about the state of the nation.

If there is not a party in my area that I can support 100% should I compromise my standards by voting for the least offensive option ?

I'm talking about an outright not even bothering to go to the station, if you in the booth and you see there are no parties you would vote for, by all means spoil your ballot, then at least you making a point.

Are you suggesting you only decide who to vote for once you are inside the voting booth ?

Whilst I choose to vote I have no issue with someone who expresses his/her view by abstaining.

I think a lot of people are taking this right for granted, and would sorely regret it if the ruling party took away the right to vote.

We're taking it for granted because it is for granted. It's one of the core tenets of the SA Constitution, which cannot be changed except by a majority vote, and I doubt that even the ANC could get the majority of Parliament to agree to remove citizens' right to vote. Hence the only way the right to vote will ever be repealed is if the ANC decides to ignore the Constitution... which unfortunately, is generally how it goes in Africa.

So the question is should SA make voting compulsory by law?

When SA is a first-world country, maybe we can revisit this question. Until then, go sit in the corner and consider why your suggestion is a monumentally stupid one.

What a load of BS... elections in SA are governed by laws of the land, not the ANC... You just have it in your mind that ANC would not want to relinquish power because of your misinformation about the Constitution of the Republic... The ANC lost the Western Cape fair and square... Didn't see no genocide there... Did you? People must stop being alarmists... I am sure you are probably one of the people who predicted mayhem and machete killings during the FIFA world cup...

Perhaps you've missed the ANC's repeated attempts to get the DA out of power in the Cape... smear tactics, the open toilets "scandal", downright lies. If they take losing a single province so badly, what do you think is going to happen if they lose 2, or 3, or the majority of the 9 provinces?

Yup, I know some of those guys. All about government contracts and permits. Not bad people, but they put business interests above that of the people.

If you put your personal business interests before your country, and you are amember of the ANC that promises "delivery for all", then you aren't just a bad person; you'll a vile hypocrite who doesn't deserve to be called a human being.

You can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket.

If you were trying to make an analogy, you failed miserably.

So the question is should SA make voting compulsory by law? And how enforceable would it be?

Whats the point? a higher turn out at the polls ?

It goes against the fundamental right to freedom of choice.

It may surprise you that there are many people out there who :
1) Have no interests in politics and politicians at all
2) Dont believe or place any faith in the political process
3) Simply dont care

Governments come and go , politicians come and go , there is always some bullcr@p, corruption, nepotism and favouritsm surrounding the political institutions.
That, never changes.

Vote if you want to , dont if you dont want to, its your choice.

Well said.

It is sickening that some people's entire existence revolves around politics.

In reality, politics should play a small part and we should all spend our time living our lives, working, playing, and learning. That is what life is about - not what Zuma did today or what Juju said yesterday.

Are you suggesting you only decide who to vote for once you are inside the voting booth ?
no, simply that if your choice is not there you don't have to vote
