Should we be Naming & Shaming Drunk Drivers?

Yeah.

But South Africa also needs a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system that operates "after hours", thus allowing people to actually enjoy themselves when they go out, without jeopardizing the safety of others on the road.
Yeah, because everyone knows you have to be drunk to enjoy yourself.

I think sandmanm34 raises an important point though: is it really that much of a "shame" to be named like this? Probably not. Unless they get severe sentences, chances are these morons will probably just laugh it off, and even "brag" about making the list.

In fact I've been to drunk to walk but have got in my car and driven over 30km's...
... aah the memories.... in the bad ol days, when I was still a kid at home, my father used to regularly get very p1ssed at the local pub too, and drive home in the wee hours of the morning.
Somehow he always managed to make it driving home quite "civilised" without any incident (so it seemed to us :D ) and as soon as he stops in front of the garage, and switches off the motor,... 2 seconds and he is asleep like a rock!
I was awake a few times, when I saw him driving home... like an old lady on sunday drive..., and as soon as he switches of engine, BAM!, lights out :D
Seemed funny at the time that a grown man, usually so responsible, could get so screwed up at times
But I doubt if he would have really cared about being named in newspapers....
(a highjacking seemed to help cure him :D )

So does that mean you're for it, or against it, or just don't care?

Apathetic people don't get laid, dude.

Dunno why, but that had me in stitches.

Anyway, I think it's fine but they should release a quarterly list covering all serious crimes and name the most serious offenders. As for the DUI of alcohol lists, I don't think they should be releasing names of first time offenders. I know people who have been convicted of DUI and learned their lessons and will never do it again (Most of them). If their names had been released, it could have ruined their lives. They messed up sure, but they were also punished for it. No need to carry on stuffing their lives up.

Ceebee?... my son? is that you???!!!

to be honest I gave up drinking about 4 years ago...

exactly my point but I've been at the scene at a number of severe car accidents and the carnage is frightening. nothing defaces and mangles the human body as effectively as a collision between 2 vehicles travelling at even the speed limit.

My point is I stopped drinking and driving about 4 years ago as a result of scenes I witnessed after a bus collided with a bakkie on the N3.

I was fortunate or unfortunate to witness the entire incident and it made a massive immpression.

I reckon drunk drivers who are caught should spend a month in casualty ward at the local state hospital as observers, they will reform pronto...

I'm guessing professionals wouldn't braG or laugh it off ... doctors, lawyers, directors etc. I think they do care about their name and reputation more than younger folk.

Best way to wake up drunk drivers is to:

1. Give a heavy fine circa R50,000 just to reflect the seriousness of the Crime! Its not a traffic violation its a Crime!

2. Anyone more than double the legal limit should have their vehicle taken away from them. If its not their vehicle say, a company car then the fine should be increased by the list price of the vehicle driven at the time of being arrested.

3. Second conviction should lead to a custodial sentence even if its for just a few weeks.

its all fun and games until you're either dead or charged with man slaughter

I think we should be naming and shaming parents who don't buckle their kids in.

We definitly need a database of Name and Shame in South Africa for Child abusers, Rapist, murderers, Drunk driver involve in an accident, Drug dealers, Shoplifters and road rage offenders with picture.
