Should your boss read your work emails?

Well we use Google business mail and the boss is admin so he can see everything going in and out. To put it simply, don't use your work email for personal things.

I never use company email accounts for anything personal, and I never put anything I would regret into company email. I use Gmail for my personal stuff, and I don't think my employer has the ability to snoop on that - even if they wanted to.

^ this

Gmail = private stuff, including correspondence from headhunters etc

Work emails = work-related emails.

This - no reason to use work mails for personal stuff.

Yes, the assumption is that my work email can be read by my employer. Therefore I make sure I don't use it inappropriately.

Company property so he can read as much as he wants. Nothing incriminating in there, I'm not dumb enough to use my work email for private stuff...

This sums it up, keep work at work, personal stuff for your email account and time.

All the companies that I've worked for have put it in their employment contract that they are allowed to access employees company emails.

If you are using your work email address for private stuff then you are a chop.

yes.

AND!!!

your boss/employer should not follow your online social movements.

simple deal. i keep my personal stuff at home and he keeps his business at the office.

otherwise voetsek.

Agreed !

I think they should have the ability to do so. If anything, they would immediately see how busy I've been working my a$$ off.

Agreed ! Well done on pointing that out !

He has the full right to do so. It's his business and his time that you are being paid for.
I fully support bosses that want to monitor work communications, it's a good insight into whether employees deliver or not.

Don't use your work email for personal things
