Should your boss read your work emails?

I never use company email accounts for anything personal, and I never put anything I would regret into company email. I use Gmail for my personal stuff, and I don't think my employer has the ability to snoop on that - even if they wanted to.

This.

but most people are twats...

Does your personal emails get stored on some central server even after you delete it from Outlook?

I know mine does actively read them on a sample basis. Don't particularly care...

He has the full right to do so. It's his business and his time that you are being paid for.
I fully support bosses that want to monitor work communications, it's a good insight into whether employees deliver or not.

Don't use your work email for personal things

Weren't you having a hernia about your boss asking you to log someones IM traffic?

Lol, gmail = private stuff?
Sure, but my boss do not have access to my gmail.

I while I don't disagree,

I know my manager can barely check his own e-mails let alone snoop around in our inboxes...

My boss can read all he wants to. I keep my inbox clean for a reason.

I use my work email for some personal stuff. Mostly the wife; I have a gmail account but don't monitor it often, so just easier for the wife and I to use each others work emails. Anyone is most welcome to read them.
Most of my friends as well, I have their work email addresses, not personal. But we don't correspond often by email.
A long time ago a previous company I worked for sent a communication saying they're going to go through everyone's email, take action if necessary. Sent everyone into a frenzy with folk deleting a bunch of emails. Nothing came of it, that I saw at least.

This is the part I'm not comfortable with, I have no problem letting my direct superior peruse my emails, but not some IT guy in the server room or something.

You know who gets asked to peruse the mail archives and pull out the relevant emails, right? Boss cannot be bothered to figure out the interface (and is actually not a mail administrator), so yeah. IT guys.

root have absolute power over the systems they administer. Administrative users needs to have a high level of ethics, because they can access anything in the company.

Of course, I don't. Because I am too busy with other things to bother seeing what's in your mailbox.

I like that my boss can see how many hits I get on linkedin.

I'm pretty sure its the reason for the changes that happened last year.

Unfortunately he/she owns the network & has full access to all. The managers ask them to go through your stuff
