So I wiped off my bike pretty hard and landed on my shoulder. The thing swelled and bruised pretty bad.
X-rays didn't reveal any breaks and the doc didn't seem concerned.

If I lightly touch the top of my should and move my arm I can feel what feels like a grinding, and sometimes it hurts quite a bit.
Just wondering, is this a ligament/tendon issue that will heal itself over time?

...then stop touching it.

I have a similar issue. In my case it's a rotatorcuff - damaged it about 7 years ago. I still feel the grinding and it occasionally hurts if I strain it in the wrong way. X-ray didn't show it up but CT scan did.

Thanks, could very well be a stuffed rotatorcuff.

If the pain is unbearable you might need a referral to a specialist and other imaging as other mentioned. (Possibly CT scan). The dr can then discuss options.

I have a manky shoulder and fell on it last week. GP gave cortisone injection as well as Celebrex and awesome pain meds. I might see the specialist if the pain doesn't go away. One of the specialist treatment options is a cortisone injection at the site itself. When I'm back on medical aid I'll go for surgery if that is an option too.

Mate of mine did an ass over tit on his MTB...pretty hard....Same with you...no visible breaks on the x-ray but 3 years later he still strugglesto lift his arms above shoulder height....If its pretty bad go to another doctor or physio or someone who knows a bit more about these injuries....

I fell on my elbow some years back
Went to Pretoria East Emergency and they checked it out and did x-rays. 3 of the doctors were looking at the x-ray and couldn't find anything.
The next day I couldn't take the pain so I arranged to see a specialist and immediately he saw my elbow was cracked.

Sounds like a Bankart injury. Better have it checked out by a doc, x-rays, & orthopod.

Or.. could simply be a bone bruise and the tendons moving over it hurts. If bruised or swollen they will in any way tell you to wait a couple days. take it easy and give it three days. my humble and often wrong advice.

Thnx for the replies and suggestions. I'm giving it 2 weeks to heal before I go mountain biking again. But I will take it easy. Pain is mostly gone, just can't sleep on that side yet and some movements are limited due to discomfort. If it persists I'll go get a CT. I'm just not the type to go to the doctors with every minor concern, but some info on mybroadband is welcome and doesn't cost time or money.
