Yes, it is possible. Watched a video on it just the other day. Let me see if I can find it.

I have no idea, that would be cool though. I want one for Google Hangouts as well. I'm surprised that Google didn't include this.

There's no unread api for WhatsApp infact I don't know of any non-stock app which has an unread api

He means the little red circle with the number in that you get native with Gmail, Phone and Messages.

Nope, just to use this widget in place of your drawer icon.

EDIT: There is a variant that works just for WhatsApp. Hopefully Android 4.3 fixes this issue completely.

Cool, thanks. Installed the free version of Whatsapp Notifyer (love the spelling, that's probably why I could not find something like this in the PlayStore )
