Show your watch thread

Yup, I’ve bought from them as well. Thing is they only have 009’s in stock (at $450 before shipping) and for some reason, the 007’s are more popular. If you can find a 007 new, you’re gonna pay at least $600 up for it. Yes, it boggles the mind.

I was just trying to figure out if there’s local demand for it for a little more sane pricing.
I'm pretty sure you'll find a ready market for your rebuilds - more so considering the personal touch that buyers would enjoy. The challenge I suspect will be that anyone shelling out a few thou will likely require some form of warranty, so you'd have to take into consideration the costs that you might incur in that process.

Hmmm, the expectation of a warranty is fair so that wouldn’t be an issue. What I won’t be able to offer is any form of water resistance guarantee. Thing is, some watches might be in great condition case wise, others might have had water do damage to mating surfaces of gaskets. Once pitting has started, getting them waterproof again is impossible. But this is details that can be worked out.

Then again, as with restoring anything for myself there are shortcomings I’d be able to live with. Selling that on means the buyer might not be able to live with those shortcomings. On the other hand, I might spend hours polishing up a case for myself, but it won’t be worth my while doing that on a piece intend to sell on. Servicing a movement is one thing, getting cosmetics done is something else entirely.

Anyway, I was just wondering if this is something worthwhile to consider. It’s not something I’d make serious money off of, it might just help offsetting some of the insane expenses of getting popular pieces to work on and upgrades of equipment. I have more watches than I could possibly wear and I find that they mostly get a week’s wrist time after being built then that’s it. Seems a shame to let them gather dust in the watch drawer.

Let us liberate your wrist sleepers. The dust busters... I'm in for something special...
Let me think of something that‘s practical then. Maybe start a little WhatsApp group for nerds and interested parties, with progress updates on builds and trade. I’m up for suggestions of course

I think if you can overcome the water resistance issue, and cater for a select group of people who are aware of the possible limitations (eg by WhatsApp group) then you'll have a winner. There is a huge resurgence of interest in mechanical watches and there will be many who prefer a well presented piece with a bit of history and a personal touch to a nondescript factory job.

Yeah, I agree with this. Always nice to have something with history and a personal touch.

Hmmm, thing is to overcome the water resistance issue is going to be a show stopper. Pretty much none of the vintage watches sold have any kind of water resistance guarantee - for the reasons I explained above. Once the gasket mating surfaces have been pitted by rust there's simply no way to fix that. Obviously I change gaskets as a matter of course but that'll only prevent future dust ingress.

Anyway, I've given this more thought and what is missing is an active South African watch community. Somewhere where anyone can sell their pieces to other enthusiasts and promote the local community. So I decided it would be a better idea to start a watch centric South African forum - something everyone can be part of. A localized resource like that doesn't exist so makes the most sense. In fact, I've already registered the domain this morning (sawatchforum.co.za - not very original but is likely what people would search for) so will keep everyone updated when it goes live.

There's a local SA watch club on instagram but it's pretty dead and doesn't seem like the ideal place to trade pieces.

He's right though. If I'm in a meeting and someone checks their phone all the time to see the time, it's poor form. A quick glance at a wristwatch is the way.
That's fine, some people needs to be the been counters we just look to the bottom right and see.

Ok, the forum is live. Sorry Admins if I'm stepping over the line to promote another forum :)

Whew, first time setting up a forum so there might be many little niggles - just bear with me. It's pretty bare at the moment, I'll post more stuff on there as I find time but for now please go there and post WRUW to get going. For now, you can sell there as well. I'll have to see how things go with spammers to decide if minimum post count will be required - I have a bad feeling about this...
