Before they were discontinued though, the prices are ridiculous for an SKX now.
I agree. for the money there are so many better options available.

The homages (yes you aren’t getting unique designs) coming out of China are insane as far as finishing goes.
Even movements like PT5000 are awesome. You can always opt for SW200 in a lot of cases (pun intended???) too

Orient has some great watches too (like the mako) - love the saturation diver 300 too, but not in the “affordable” range

Nice. How much did this watch cost you?

R3k off of Carbonite iirc.

:D

Those look great, how do they compare to the SKX in terms of build and the original RRP?

Don't own one but it's a got the newer 4R36 movement. I would be getting one of these instead of an skx if I didn't have one already.

I love the saturation diver too but jirre, that thing is HUGE! The Marine Master 300 is one of my grails though. As for what's currently on the "hitlist," the new 38mm Bambino. I "need" a dress watch.

What movement is in that Tisell? It's a nice submariner homage. How do you find it?

Yes, the 4R36 movement is nicer than the 7S26 in the SKX, but that’s it. Outside of that the SKX is better because of the higher WR rating and the screw down crown. The 5KX in the hand feels somehow less substantial than the SKX. I’m probably biased because I have 4 SKX’s but to me the newer version feels like a downgrade (except for the movement). Theres no Lume pip on the bezel and then the intensity of the Lume on the 5KX is nowhere near what it is on the SKX. If you want SKX Lume today, you’ll have to go for the SE Samurais.

I have used cerium oxide but the diamond polish cuts quicker and you can start on a coarser grits to do the bulk of the work and then move to the finer stuff. I got a handful of syringes of the different grades from eBay for around R100, which should last an eternity.

To change a crystal you’d need a press and the special glue?
Hmmm, I do have various grades of diamond pastes here that I also tried but was somehow less effective than cerium oxide. Granted, I didn’t spend too much time with the diamond paste to be honest, maybe I should give it a go again.

To change crystals isn’t really a DIY job. You do need a press for it and a way to take off the case back and remove the movement. It’s seldom that you need to glue a crystal, usually they’re held in place by force from the gasket, or have a tension ring.

Miyota 9015.

Only thing is I don’t like that shape of the end links

If I was buying today I would buy the San Martin with SW200. It amazing finishing and bracelet

Thanks. I stand pleasantly corrected.

That movement is a workhorse. Wear it in good health.

Heh, you stole that watch for R3k. Decent ones go for $300 up all day, every day on overseas auction sites. Then you still need to get it here. NOS ones are $500’ish for the 009 and $650 for the 007. I’ve not seen any NOS 011’s for a long time; I suspect they’ll be stupid money on auction

If you hate the rubber strap (I know I do) you can still buy the original Seiko Jubilee bracelets for them - I think I paid around 45’ish GBP for a bunch of them a few weeks ago. I should really check if Treger has local stock and how much it is

Amazon Japan has this watch for like r3300 delivered to your door
Interesting. VAT?
I have the standard black GA2100 and love it. I want the metal one as well but it is like R7k locally.

Does anyone have any vintage small face Divers watches?
Post some pics please!

They are popular, so many mods, what a watch!
What did they used to typically retail for?

How does the Movements in the last 2 generations of Sekio Automatic Divers compare to similar Swiss movements, from the perspective of quality, complexity and reliability?

They used to retail for around $250 new right at the end but you could pick them up new for just under $200 before that. Incredible value for money at the time - that’s mainly why they were so popular. There’s a whole cottage industry built around mods for these, although I seriously wouldn’t be modding any SKX today. They still popular 25 years later because it’s still a good watch, but the only reason they fetch stupid prices is because of FOMO.

As far as movements between Japanese and Swiss, you’ll need a little context and there again it’s hard to draw any kind of easy comparison. If your metrics are only quality, complexity and reliability, then a $50 Seiko movement is comparable to any Swiss movement in the $150 range (because that’s where Swiss movements start). That being said, Seiko uses a lot of stamped parts with larger tolerances than Swiss movements that uses milled parts and lower tolerances. I should be careful when making analogies, but think Hilux vs Amarok - ultra reliable Japanese (lacking some finesse) vs slightly more refined German (albeit a bit more fussy). Both are excellent at doing their jobs though.

I’m busy working on two movements from the late 60’s - a Seiko 5606 and an Omega 565. At the time they were used in watches pitched at the same customer - the Seiko offering better features and more interesting design vs the Omega being rather basic but featuring a beautifully executed movement under the hood. I’d hazard to say that the Seiko’s movement aged better as far as reliability goes than the Omega, although the Omega was technically the better performer at the time.

Today Seiko doesn’t offer the same value and innovation it did all those years ago (they’ve been slowly getting more expensive in comparison to say, a Hamilton) and their QC has dropped a little at the same time. Just like a Hilux today…
