Morning all, I am toying with the idea of getting a strap or 2 for my submariner. Wtf do I start looking, what's good and what's crap? I have no idea what these things cost or should cost.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Any advice and tips are welcome.

Thanks

Go a few posts back...

Presuming you have a sub with a black dial you can wear pretty much any colour strap. Look at Nato & rubber & leather.

What type of strap? Rubber, leather, other?

I am not a huge fan of leather, so if I was in your shoes I would get one of the following 3.

If you want leather, I would suggest checking out the rolex forum on WUS. Also, https://www.everestbands.com/ will have something premium.

Why is there a negative connotation on Rolex watches?
Because they overpriced for what you get. You pay for the name, it's a status symbol. You can buy better quality timepieces for a quarter of the price.

A complete dimwit knowing nothing about watches goes and buys an "overpriced" Rolex sports model.

Look after it and a few years later your "inferior timepiece" will have appreciated much better than 99% than anything else the market offers.

Change my mind.

I’d say there’s some tarnish around the brand.

In the old days, they were the preserve of the ‘mature’ chest wig and medallion crowd. They found appeal in the small diameter gaudy dials and two tone combos. Wall Street and spivs alike bought them in droves. The workmanlike divers and gmts had some appeal in steel but their bracelets were a massive let down by the time the 90s rolled in. Still they sold steadily to those who liked the staid but highly reliable nature of them. They didn’t exactly fly off the shelves and you could buy them then and there, even negotiating a discount easily.

By 2012ish, ceramic arrived along with bigger dials on the sports models as well as the Day Date, Datejust and Perpetuals. Datejust dials got even gaudier. The steel Daytona became a grail for many and was the first waitlisted model. Unheard of for a basic steel chrono but the brand was starting to become a big deal in the modern connected world. Parts-bin crud like the modern Air King arrived along with the oddball Milgauss.

Then the abhorrent combination of Instagram, influencers and speculators took Rolex to its bizarre current form of being a must have acquisition in the age of glib consumerism and showy nouveau rich.

To buy anything at RRP, you’re now forced to buy £30000 of unwanted jewellery and lesser brands to obtain a place on an imaginary waitlist. Some pay the hefty premiums on the gray market when this sort of money could get you actual watchmaking from the likes of ALS and JLC. But Rolex is instantly recognisable and thats why they’re in demand. The level of cringe on display from the enthusiast crowd is something to behold.

A 36mm Explorer will find its way into my possession but never in the current bubble.

As an investment there is a fair argument for one but buying one for a watch to wear doesn’t make much sense, you are throwing bag loads of cash away purely for the Rolex cachet. I’d also feel uncomfortable wearing a watch with such an ostentatious reputation. I personally purchase goods based on value for money and paying a hugely inflated price that Is not reflected in higher grade materials or construction is a solid no from me.

That being said one very handy “feature” of a Rolex is being able to move a pretty hefty amount of money around, on your arm, across borders, anywhere, without any scrutiny. You can sell a Rolex anywhere in the world if you urgently need cash.

Never thought about the moving money around on your arm angle. Would explain all the Rolex robberies at or near OR Tambo.

Was it money brought into the country?

Eish. So the Laco Diver I want is going to sit too big for my liking. My next choice was a Mido Ocean Star, which I like but once again too big. The Mido Tribute is an option but I'm not overly keen on it, which brings me to the lovely Oris Aquis...

The AD has the black one at a massive 20% off, on a strap.

But the Turquiose one is just so nice, but is full price.

Ooh the turquoise one just pops and is my fave.

Yeah it's a beaut! I also have a few blue dial watches so the turquiose is a nice change. Really want it but going to have to give it some more thought as it's much more than I want to spend, but it's the last of my collection that I'm wanting to "upgrade".

The Mido tribute also looks lovely, but I'm not completely sold on the look.
