Your manager is correct. Most companies require a sick certificate if the person is off on a Friday or Monday (or the day before a public holiday. If you went to the doctor on Saturday you should have asked for a certificate to cover the Friday.
They can ask, but do not have a legal leg to stand on. Some companies have been changing this to requesting one when there is a pattern of absenteeism on those days. That would be legal.

This demonstrates the difference between a good manager and a bad one.

This holds true ...

Unfortunately, managers are usually that in title but are not that in spirit or intellect.

Personally, with or without a sick note, I can pay my staff. If the evidence around the time indicates that the person was ill, and their record is usually good IRO attendance, I would not ask them to take MORE time off to get a note, that will make no difference to what has transpired in the past.

Yup, basic conditions of employment says they can only ask for one after 2 consecutive days.

requesting one when there is a pattern of absenteeism

Also this: ...or on more than two occasions during an eight-week period.
