Sight "Eastern Africa submarine cable delayed for one year"

Last year, former CEO Sizwe Nxasana said Telkom would think twice about investing in EASSy if it was forced to reduce the fees it charged rival operators to use its bandwidth on Sat-3,

Of course this has nothing to do with it ...

They said Q4 2007 in our podcast interview... So this is not a total shock. :) At least it is next year and not 2010 or some distant date...

For peeps interested in Submarine Cable Tech... Click here...

They mention TYCO in the Wikipedia content page, which plays a part in the EASSY cable... There is also a list of Intl submarine cables that will blow your mind...

The Pigfarm is still at it!

The Pigfarm is still threatening everybody so they can protect their legalised theft of citizen earnings

Last year, former CEO Sizwe Nxasana said Telkom would think twice about investing in EASSy if it was forced to reduce the fees it charged rival operators to use its bandwidth on Sat-3, a cable connecting Portugal to Johannesburg, in which Telkom owns a 13% stake.

The communications regulator is debating whether Sat-3 is an essential service, and whether it should force Telkom to cut its access fees.

If Telkom was forced to slash its fees and could not recoup its costs, it might withdraw from EASSy, Nxasana said. Yesterday Telkom said it was still considering the investment in the EASSy cable and had not made a final decision on the amount it planned to invest.

Telkom please do NOT invest. Leave that to the SNO, ISP's and private sector so we all can send you to Helkom and gone. WE do not need you, (only now when forced to), we do not want you or your sh@t services, we do not condone you, WE WANT TO PACK YOU and get Shulltleworth to ship you

G@d, that feels better.

What does this mean in real numbers, How many users, at what bandwith, Whwre are we now and where will we be after the new cable goes active.

If Telkomonly owns 13% of the SAT-3 cable who have the rest ?

A lot. If, say, half of 1.6Tbits/s could be allocated to consumer broadband, it would support over 33 million 512kbps e.g. ADSL connections contended at 20:1. That's enough for every household and business in South Africa and probably all surrounding countries too. (And note, out of interest, that Telkom could easily afford to install multiple such cables on their profits from one year alone. Although that excludes the international bandwidth connectivy costs, but if economies of scale were implemented that wouldn't be a problem.)

Whwre are we now and where will we be after the new cable goes active.
SAT-3 capacity currently totals about 250 Gbits/s (120 on the West side and 130 on the East). In total this is enough for probably about 20,000,000 512kbps ADSL connections at 20:1 (although obviously it's not all supposed to be used for broadband, some is used for calls etc.). (Note that much of the SAT-3 capacity is still unused, i.e. there is currently ample capacity to handle growth but Telkom limits the growth by charging crazy prices.)

Then why is the Eassy cable so important if we have reserve capacity unused on Sat-3.

Telkom B@stards, stealing our money while holding back our economy and growth all for the sake of a few fat cats. Someone should put whoever can make a difference on Telkom, like Al Queda

Because Telkom is the only ones with access to the SAT-3, they can charge what they want, but with Eassy, anyone can have access AFAIK.

Yeah, but Telkom is maybe going to be a player in this cable. G@D please let it no be !. Thus then I hope they will not influence the others by their ways. IMHO the GVT must prohibit Telkom to invest. Then they can have to whole of the SAT-3 cable eventully to use as their own internal weblink to Telkom international. Me think, only problem is they would be so expensive they will rather use the SNO as a ISP. HeHe

Good plan pupa - where do I sign up? :D

Sign up at @Telkom...Hehe. Must be a inside job! I think I have it wrong, based on the way Telkom is damaging the country by limiting and holding back growth , they are the same as Al Qaeda, terrorists. We could put our army on them... but then again maybe not.. they are so useless, not more punch than a local security agency, if not worse.

Physical punch may be small - but technological punch is massive -. 'Ignore' punch is biggest of all.

How much have Telscum invested in this cable?

If it's a substantial portion then we might still see high prices unfortunately :(

The project co-ordinator for Eassy has stated that affordable access is a key criteria and they have already revised their estimated pricing downwards, so things are looking up. There will also be a link to Gaberone so anyone thinking of laying a national network could run a bit of cable from Gabs to Mafikeng and link into the system as well.

Eassy is much more than one submarine cable it is a system that will bring most of Southern and East Africa onto the Internet in a huge way.

they are lighting up 10Gbps out of the 320Gbps available initially and from the figures I have heard the local market will only be able to use 300Mbps initially so there should be plenty of room to grow.

Aparently they are still deciding, they threaten to withdraw (I pray for that they do) if they do not get their way. Typical of the controlling thieves, never know when to give up!! Their time will come that for sure!

...waiting, waiting, waiting... me (and the universe) turn to dust while we're... waiting, waiting. :(
