Greetings.
Vorna Valley, Midrand - on top of a granite dome I'm told - apparently that's why we're chewing through an external modem every two months or worse.
(Despite, earth spikes, copper-conducting and surge-protection)
Then there's the copper theft and related Hellkom "service issues".
Sheesh, every time it rains at least one of the lines goes belly up because ... " the lines are flooded."
I have considered ADSL or ISDN, but we're still exposed to copper as well as the poor (old line) quality with signal noise and outages.
So ... why not go wireless instead ?
This is for a home office - email, browsing, banking etc.
(I was hoping for online gaming as well , but have to be realistic ;-))
I had a look at iBurst, but it's not viable (yet?).
Always-on would be nice, but their current nonsense sent me running.
The thought now is to install 3G on the desktop server using PCI-PCM rear slotcard ... even if it comes from the UK.
(Either that or somehow Cellphone-to-PC connection - suggestions ?)
Vodacom signal from this location is odd - showing max network bars on the cell-phone, but with apparent "packet-loss" in terms of garbled speech being quite frequent.
1. Is it possible to do some sort of (amateur) radio test for feasibility ?
(I guess data retries would help to reach the bundle limit quite quickly)
2. Any ideas on whether the mentioned antenna would be an option ...
... but surely this exposes us to the same lightning problem again ?
3. I am assuming this could be configured to work the same as DUN ...
... these are not technically competent users so I would prefer to connect sans the dashboard.
