Hi everybody

I signed up for the 8ta i5 promo last year, and really enjoy the service I have received so far.
My problem is that I have moved to another suburb and now the signal is zero. I can't even connect.

I will add that on the promo map I am still in the pink area, close to the border of it but my house is totally covered.

Anybody out there with advice on boosting the signal or getting an antenna that will help me?
I have searched the web but man what a mission, so many bad websites and some guys don't bother getting back to me?

Anybody?...please!

I'm not a fan of Telkom and any comments I made about my perception of their service would probably be stricken by the Moderator. Still, your first port of call should perhaps be the 8ta help-desk, always assuming such an animal exists, or the dealer where you bought the package.

Somewhere in the fine-print there is bound to be a disclaimer to the effect that the coverage map in not necessarily accurate. On the other hand, they may just install an aerial for you if that will solve the problem. There are cases on record where other service providers have done this but it would perhaps be best not to hold your breath while you wait.

If 8ta cannot resolve the problem and enable you to connect in a area where they say there is coverage, at least you will have grounds for canceling the deal and taking you business elsewhere.

True, I hated their ADSl...the 3G service has really been amazing, I was very happy. So I would hate to cancel the deal, after all I was the one who moved?

It works! Wow... quite slow loading times

Disconnect, close mdma, then replug modem using USB extension cable. Don't try to connect with extension, just try to re-orient modem to find better signal and post results.

Also model number is important.

Also wondering about this. I setup 8ta 3gig promo for my bro (in boksburg) this past weekend. Mdma showed signal strength at -97 to -91 dbi. Speeds were relatively decent @ above 2Mbps d/l. Upload and ping were poor @ 0.6 Mbps and 77 respectively. Tested using speedtest.net;his modem is an huawei e230. He bought a 3m usb extension and will try re-positioning the modem. My question is: -any suggestions for a simple diy antenna to boost signal. Like op said, i been reading all over the net and just hoping to find a tried-and-tested method here. Ive experimented with kitchen utensils and other make-shift antennae at home-best i got was a 2dbi gain. Busy experimenting with the parabolic template i came across elsewhere in these forums. Hope it's worth the effort lol.

Interesting you say that...as I am also in Boksburg and the signal is poor

Pierre, yes signal was poor. Those figures were for my bro's huawei modem here's what I got on my ZTE modem(vodafone k3805) on the upper storey of the same house:

He lives close to the Westwood Spar, btw. So yeah, we figured he can't reposition his desktop. And can't budget for a 3G router at the mo. So we were just trying out temporary solutions to improve signal/ping.

I found that Boksburg is too near the airport so you guys are stuck with shorter cell towers.[That's just a layman's questionable observation - don't quote me on it lol :) ] My suggestion is to try an external antenna, or a portable-3G-router or usb-modem placed higher up.

And please post here if you find a trick that works!
