Ok, so I was too hasty in what I was doing when the Telkom promo people offered me a product that, um, I'm not even 100% sure what it is ....

The contract is 24 months and when I asked about cancellation, I was told (verbally) the penalty would be payment of the modem. I got nothing in wring and yes, I realize it was stupid :/

Anyone know what the real penalty is at all?

Did they phone you?
If so, and if it's within 7 days, iirc, you can cancel without penalty (perhaps only the modem), because you were talked into something you didn't really want.
 
It sounded like this http://www.telkom.co.za/sites/athom.../internetanddatabundles/&productname=do Elite - but a 30GB cap as opposed to 50GB for the same price?

He said he'd give me his mail/cell for any issues or queries, but ignored me and can't reach him ever since. Telkom call centre have no idea about my current situation and are incorrectly billing me, telling me they manage my current ADSL and tell me I have a 4mbps line - all wrong.

I hate dealing with Telkom

Nah I arrived home and they had 3 or 4 Telkom promoters walking around the complex selling either VDSL/ADSL2 (no idea which). He's obviously avoided me for the 7 days purposely so I couldn't cancel.

I didn't mind the package *that* much - R768.00 for everything included and either 30/50GB cap (no one can tell me ...), but :

* Crystal Web said they may be able to work something out
* My neighbor (different exchange though) only gets 13mbps real world vs my 9mbps real world.
* His torrents go at 30kb/sec vs my 800kb/sec for the first 100GB.

I'm thinking I'll rather stay where I am or try go VDSL/ADSL2 with Crystal

Recently signed for 4mb adsl and to avoid paying installation charges went with a Simple plan for R499 with router and installation included along with 20gb data and tel line included.

Luckily, well i pray its true, its not a 24 month contract like i thought.
But will see, praying I don't get some hidden charges coming...........

Okay, point is they contacted you, and not the other way round.
