Speakers are good, but that will definitely exceed his budget by quite a bit.

Dion Wired recently had a great deal on a Marantz NR1402 + Jamo S416HCS + Jamo Sub200 for R6999. I'm not sure if they're still running it, but check if that's still available first :)

DPLII it is actually pretty good ...

I had the first amplifier to incorporate DPLII and it really did make stereo sources much more interesting back in the day when hi-fi stereo VCR's were king ;) My car has DPLII and music is actually pretty awesome

The centre channel is encoded by placing it equally in the left and right channels; the rear channel is encoded using phase shift techniques. A Pro Logic decoder/processor "unfolds" the sound into the original 4.0 surround—left and right, center, and a single limited frequency-range (7 kHz low-pass filtered[1]) mono rear channel—while systems lacking the decoder play back the audio as standard stereo.

DPL II implements greatly enhanced steering compared to DPL, and as a result, offers an exceptionally stable sound field that simulates 5 channel surround sound.

DPL = virtual surround with 4 channels from 2 channels

DPL2 = virtual surround with 5 channels from 2 channels

It works, beautifully.

Probably not. But DPL is excellent when there are only 2 speakers (with an optional sub), hence the recommendations.

Also down to personal preference, and the room.

Nah, DPL's simulated 5.1 wont match the accuracy of real DD5.1 recorded in 5 ch. Still DLP & DPLII (more adv processing routines) do a pretty decent job of creating surround/directional sound from a 2ch source.
 
OP has a 5.1 system which is why I was questioning recommendations for a 2ch DPL setup. Came across to me as simulated/matrixed surround being punted as a better choice than 5.1.

Re-read the thread, you misunderstand. At least in my case, it was advised that the higher-end component route should be taken; and that 2 channel sound while saving up for 5.1/7.1) would provide an excellent surround experience because of DPL in the interim.

You and I would agree that 5.1/7.1 is better, but not when it's from a cheapie DVD combo... :sick:

And please disable that frikken App signature already.

Wow. Signature disabled.

And sometimes a "cheapie" DVD combo is enough for someone. We're not all loaded audiophiles, willing (or able) to spend thousands of Rands on sound.
