ANC's action: More toll gates likely to fund R35 billion in road works

There is not enough money available to fix roads, so more toll gates will probably have to be built on national roads, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said in a report on Thursday.

More than 4 100 kilometres of roads -- or 32 percent of the national road network -- are in such a bad state that they only have a "structural life span" of five years left.

DA's action: No new roads for 5 years

The provincial government has decided to stop building roads in the Western Cape for at least the next five years and intends using the estimated R14-billion saved to develop public transport infrastructure.

Public Works and Transport MEC Robin Carlisle says public transport is the answer to the congestion on Cape Town's roads.

Road projects which are already under way - including those on Hospital Bend, Koeberg Interchange, the eastern and western boulevards as well as the N2 - will be completed.

With all these articles about how the guvament is failing, it makes you wonder if there is anything they can do apart from screw over the tax payer!

Building public transport infrastructure is by far the better than building roads.

Building roads and public transport infrastructure will both produce jobs in the short term during the construction phase, but public transport needs to staffed and ticket sales fund it. It offers better long term employment benefits.

Does anyone know what major road infrastructure has been builtin the last 15 years? Or have they just been maintaining? The only one coming to mind is the Cape tunnel, the freeway between Bloem and wynberg? and both of those have tolls already.

Looking around Cape Town - nothing. They have been building for the last 1-2 years but before that and the early 90s - NOTHING.

SA has been focusing on maintenance. Maintenance of roads, maintenance of rail links (although if you look around Cape Town you'll see more disused tracks - eg Paarden Eiland), maintenance of power delivery (although they've demolished 3 municipal power stations in Cape Town in the last 10 years), maintenance of hospitals (they've taken away Conradie Hospital in Cape Town - closed it down). Universities--? Well the Cape Technikon was renamed into a University. LOL. Nothing otherwise.

Cape Town Int'l Airport is the worst airport you can imagine. The parking is fubared and chaotic. The halls are still tiny. The porters are still useless and want tips for nothing. ACSA now wants hikes. LOL. Stupidity. CTIA is like a hovel - a poorly organized, designed and run one.

That's why my maties (not the Univ of Stell type) we are so failing and will continue to do so.

High crime rates.
High TB, HIV, Diabetes/hypertension, childhood illness rates.
Poor transport.
Expensive power supply.
More taxes for the middle class which also discourage saving and investment. Why invest if you must pay a lot of it back in tax?
Stricter labour laws which discourage investment and employment.

When a worker goes to a state clinic they spend the entire day there - be it a simple cold or tension headache they come in with. Often they need to return the next day to collect their meds. It is ridiculous and sadly the govt does not think that this impacts the economy. But thankfully we have gold, silver, diamonds, uranium, copper, platinum, etc to save our butts. Otherwise we're a service economy mostly.
