Hi ,
I know zero about graphics - looking for an uncomplicated app to try learn basics (Apple compatible).
Appreciate any recommendations... thanks.

I'd suggest Gimp but it's not very beginner friendly. Not difficult, but better to use after you start on something simpler.

Does Apple have a MS paint style app (built-in)? That's were most people (including myself) start off.

You'll get tired of it quickly but then can move on to Gimp once you know the basics.

Inkscape - great for vector graphics.
Paint.net - simple app, I still use it when I need a quick .png

Gimp - fully loaded but yeah, like @who.dat said, it can be overwhelming at first. However, you can just focus on a few core elements like: selection tools, layers and brushes.

These are all free.

Thanks, yes I use Apple photos app for filter, colour, sharpen, crop, etc - got as far as adding shapes/ text /shadows. Played around with MS premium photo back in MS days, but moving/copying/resizing an object from one pic to another was beyond me.

Having a look at Gimp, cheers.

Thanks, will do - think probably selection tools is where I get stymied . Need app that'll read my mind

I would suggest PhotoScape, it works on Mac. Fully featured but very easy to use ... Tried GIMP a few years ago, it was quite complicated for me.

I think you will love PhotoScape.

Thanks for this, had a quick look at the site tutorials & can actually recognise much of what's going on - will watch & learn - great stuff ! :D

Looking forward to your contributions on the photoshop-game thread.

Hahaha ... probably a few years before I can do that stuff. Got so stuck on my first feeble lasso attempts last week that my eyes still haven't stopped rolling.

No just try something simple. No better way at learning than by doing. Even if it doesn't look right, you will learn. My early attempts were kak, but I learned along the way.

If you find a transparent image / something you've cropped all you need is some scaling & rotating to place it into the scene so that it looks like it's part of the scene. You can play along without doing anything remotely technical. Every time you do it you try a new tool or adding shadow etc. If you wanna learn, just start using it as much as possible - the photoshop game is a great place to start.
