To be honest this is all a bit of the paranoia side of things and smartify’ing for the sake of it.

If your device was going to die due to a surge the odds are that it’s still going to die even with a Sonoff in between.

A lack of money all round for something that will likely never happen.

Rather up your insurance to cover such instances specifically for less money.

If the sonoff is in an off state and a surge takes place, it shouldn't travel down the line as the sonoff would be drawing minimal power to maintain its state. For me its more about a controlled on off at times around when there are major draws and pulls on circuits.
