The song was written by Barry Adamson, Nick Cave and Mick Harvey in mid-late 1984. Using biblical imagery, the song describes the birth of Elvis Presley during a heavy storm in Tupelo, Mississippi.[1] The song is loosely based on the John Lee Hooker song of the same title, which also focuses on a flood in the same town. The "looky looky yonder" motif that is featured in the song is derived from a song of the same name recorded by Lead Belly, usually found as part of a medley which Cave himself covered under the title "Black Betty" on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' third album, Kicking Against the Pricks.

"Tupelo" was released on 29 July 1985.

I've got an unplugged acoustic version of that song that's just so raw it can bring you to tears.

The Stranglers are one of my all time favourite bands. Grab a greatest hits and delve deeper. Always the Sun, No More Heroes, Peaches, Duchess tc etc

And in the same vein and on the topic, I heard Panic last year or so ago, remembered how good the Smith were, and grabbed a lot of their stuff.

Another band not so popular outside the UK and another favourite of mine since the late 70s is the Jam. A Town Called Malice was on The Walking Dead recently, maybe it prompted a few people to dig deeper. Grab a greatest hits and cry that you missed them (if indeed you did), but then smile at the amazing journey ahead as you acquaint yourself.
