Telkom shaping policy for their new 1mbs package

Speed Restrictions
6am - 6pm: up to 295 kbps
6pm - 10pm: up to 354 kbps
10pm - 6am: up to 1 mbps
No restriction on local data

Who uses them for an ISP any way ? IMO, if you want cheap uncapped = MWEB (best shaping rules of the lot) or for paid packages = Afrihost (50gig capped is really nice @ under R10 per gig)

These archaic limitations really cast grave doubt over the alleged robustness of their national infrastructure.

rawr, i comment on a thread even though I don't use them as an ISP, rawr. I'm so mad I'm going to cancel my dstv to spite them and myself. rawr

come out with a minimum of a 1Mbps line BUT you can still only use it at the old speeds of 384kbps......:wtf:

Telkom - The joke of the international communication community.

Did you guys know they never applied any shaping prior to the upgrades (even though they said they would). I doubt they'll start now...

These sound like rules made by people who do not understand the technology of the company they are running

You need to differentiate between Telkom (as the physical line) and Telkomsa as an ISP.
Coz if it is shaping controlled by Telkom - then switching to MWEB is not gonna help as the physical line is shaped.

If Telkomsa ISP is shaping then by all means switch to MWEB or anyone else.

Who can confirm?

It's on the 1Mbps uncapped package from TelkomSA that they are throttling not the lines.

Just saw this on their 10Mbps package:
Speed Restrictions
6am - 6pm: up to 650 Kbps
6pm - 10pm: up to 1 Mbps
10pm - 6am: up to 10 Mbps
No restrictions on local data

That's fcking ridiculous Telkom it's only R1400/m

I'll stick to my Axxess account for R496/m that doesn't throttle me

LOL ... telkom does not shape the adsl line ... only their own ISP protocols. As does each ISP for their own product.

This isn't a "new" package, this is the same package as announced last year, just you get the 1Mbps at the old 384 price.

1)This is based on the SAIX ADSL reseller profiles that are available. Telkom Internet (retail) has no contol over these products/profiles, and since at present we are forced to use SAIX ADSL reseller (not IPC), we are limited to these.
2)The actual service may differ (e.g., be better than advertised), but legally we have to cover ourselves

If you haven't actually tried it in the past 3 months, you shouldn't judge based on the description.

3)Things will change soon ...
