Is there a classified where the sales are pretty centralised - or do I need to search all classads like normal?

Thanks guys.

I want to see if the the old Mac Minis are cheap enough to warrant a HTPC

What is a small, decent looking case that can be used?

The Mini seems to have the GFX, sound and speed in a compact case - which is great

Tbh the Mini case is nice, it's just that I'm not sure what HTPC software is there for Mac OSX. Then again I guess you could run Windows on there.

Yea - that's what a friend did.

A new one is overkill at 7,500.00 for an i5 though ...

Search for mini-itx cases. Personally, I'd go for a case with a bit more volume and put a discrete GPU in there, but the mac mini only has Intel HD 4000 graphics (afaik), so if you want something similar, onboard graphics would be fine.

Ridiculous bargains to be had on the USA Apple Refurbished website... This site specialises in keeping an eye on things. Doesn't really help us down in ZA - but has me planning prolonged stays Stateside one day... :)

Depressingly - given the exchange rate - the prices on the refurb UK site are not that far off what you would be paying in ZA...

Locally - Digicape is something I look at regularly - although many of the ads that get popped are very low on detail... Carbonite/OLX/Gumtree/BidorBuy and iPhoneZA.co.za are what I watch... some pretty good deals to be had - with the obvious warning about scammers...

I almost pulled the trigger on an i7 of my current i5 model... and then I came back to my senses... :)

There's also the Intel NUC, no idea as to price and availability here. I would just get a mini-itx board & case if small is what you want.

Perfect solution for just that; as example: until recently I had a 2010 mac mini (dual core 2.4Ghz, 4Gb RAM, and 6 Tb Media drives ) driving entertainment to: 6 x Apple TVs, 3 x iPads, 4 x iPhones, and 5 x Macs. On a typical evening, 5 TVs would be connected and streaming Movies / TVs shows.

The Mac Mini also had Plex installed to provide more US network channels to the Apple TVs, using PlexConnect https://github.com/iBaa/Plexconnect.

The 2010 mini's basic spec by today's standard was more than enough for this.

The only reason I replaced it for a new one was to upgrade to Thunderbolt, and to also have some extra processor capacity as an additional backup OS X Server (local DNS, DHCP, Mail, Web, MySQL, Xcode bot server, Git code hosting, Backups, ...)

As I said they're more than capable.

You aren't by any chance related to the gluttony man from Se7en?
