Six die as learner driver fails to stop

The scariest thing I've ever seen is these small cars i10s etc cut in front of a bus.
 
What is worse is the people that learn to drive in a small truck because there is some or other loophole in the system and the rules of parking (parallel parking for example) are much less strict.

I forgot what license codes are involved.

I see those every day. People that never have never even been a passenger in a car, learning to drive a small truck.

Jeez that's only a marginally less kak idea than having people drive on public roads having done nothing but a theoretical test.

I still say there should be a yard test BEFORE your learners or even better a government approved advanced driving course.

Code 8 is car License which require parallel parking test in the Yard
Code 10 (small truck) does not require parallel parking test in the Yard.

It is easy to spot the code 10 okes, just ask them to reverse park into a parking spot.
A lot of mining companies implement reverse parking as part of their "safety measures",

You must see the car guards look at me very funny when I reverse park in the shopping parking spaces using my mirrors only, Great Fun.

It's an old mistake in the SA licence system, which was carried over when we switched to the credit card licence, which is based on the EU licence.

Code B, part of old code 8, is for vehicles with a gvm below 3500kg.
Code C1, part of old code 10, is for vehicles with a gvm between 3500 and 17000 (I think)

When SA switched, we kept the old principle of a code 10 (C1) allowing you to drive a code 8 (B) car. In the EU, a code B is required before taking a code C1/C/D1/D. They use D for busses and C for trucks, while we group it all under code C. I think that Botswana correctly implements the system, and a code B is a requirement for a heavier licence.

How else would you reverse into a parking spot? Have only ever used mirrors. Thought it was the norm.
 
3rd World we are, 40 km/h on a 4 lane highway in the fast lane. We all get dragged down to the lowest denominator azzhole.

So they must learn to drive in order to get the permit that allows them to learn to drive.

Multiple ways of doing it. None involve requiring someone to help outside the car though.

Maybe people thought that was the law. Like they seem to think the law requires them to have a learner sign in the back of their car.

See this all to often on the N1 in Joburg - and they'll sit in the 2nd to right hand lane trundling along at max 80kms/h.

A nervous driver is just as dangerous on the roads and an inexperienced driver - imho.

There was a proposal to change this I think and lobby groups argued it'd make it near impossible for poor people at enter the economy as they are hardly able to afford the current driver's test for a single class as it is.
 
With regards to passengers, as long as there is a licensed driver in the vehicle, there may be passengers. My neighborhood has ended up being the local training grounds in Pinetown for learners. You can get stuck behind as many as 5 different learner cars in the space of 2km, and they mount the pavements while attempting to change gears and navigate corners. They all have passengers in them (obviously swop learner drivers after their allotted time has expired). We have tried numerous times to get the authorities to deal with the situation as about 2 years ago a learner killed a cyclist on our roads. There's just nothing we can do to prevent them using our roads.

Some of these guys must just be in a car as a driver for the first time... its unbelievable to watch. 1st gear at 10km an hour weaving all over the place. And on our narrow twisty roads there's very little or no place to pass them. This starts at sunrise from 6AM to past 7PM at night ... every day some even on Sundays.

Took a Quantum from Durbs to Toti last night because my train was broken down.

We managed to pack 19 adults into that thing and it was a 13 seater. I was right in the middle, I couldn't see squat outside and the air was this dense fog of breathe and sweat.

They must show basic competence in what they are trying to achieve. This is standard practise in most things in the world. Same way you take 3-4 years to get a degree, but you need to pass the first year to proceed to the others.

Your logic is flawed. The permit doesn't just allow them to learn to drive, it allows them to drive like anyone else by simply writing a test, which is a broken and flawed system.

Practical output through theoretical input makes no sense whatsoever.

Nope, it definitely was the law when I had my learners way back when.

We do deliveries daily with one of those utility vans that don't have side windows, you can only use your side mirrors. They all look at me in bewilderment.
