Ok my sons birthday is coming up and he wants a skateboard. Now which one to buy.

He is 5 years old

Concerns:

He will try it once then it will gather up dust in his closet, thus do I buy a cheapie, but then again the thing is so useless and difficult to ride for a 5 year old?

Or do i go for a bit more expensive one. There is one at Toys R Us for R150(cheapie) and a better looking one at Sportsman's warehouse for R300

Well i'm older now and I started with the crap, and compared to something decent, the difference is worlds apart. Having said that both those options are cheapie's. Back in 96 a complete pro board would set you back like R 700.00 - R 800.00. Just a decent deck probably costs that now...(That is the wood part :) Just in case you did not know). I'm sure you can pick up an iron fist complete setup for about R 600 to R 700, if you willing to spend that much. At least he would not be starting on junk then.

Edit: Don't skate any more the ground is a hellava alot harder after 30. Cant find Iron fist online but these look pretty decent. http://revolutiononline.co.za/product-category/skate/completes/

See this is my dilemma if I spend R700 and he only uses it once an dont like it

I reckon that's ok for a 5-yr old.

If he carries on you can get him something better later or there's always swapping out trucks & decks.

Ok so I will rather take the one at sportsman's warehouse over the cheaper one from Toys R us

Thank for the input guys appreciated

this

He will probably play longer with the packaging.
