Skydiving in Johannesburg

Morning all,

So I'm pretty keen on going skydiving for the first time, anyone know of or can recommend a good place to go with in the Johannesburg area? :)

I wanted to try it out as well so went to www.jsc.co.za and did a static line jump :eek:

was cool but not for me :p but i did it :D

edit: my instructor was kevin owen, great guy and makes you feel very comfortable etc.

Was actually just looking at that site before I posted :) Was looking at the tandem jump but the pricing wasn't the most attractive. I always thought it would be around R1600-R1700 including a dvd but now I don't know if the price has just gone up or that jsc place is just expensive. :)

Do you want to do this on a regular basis or just as a once off?
If a once off, then do the Tandem with camera.
If you are serious about proper skydiving, e.g. freefall - then save up or take out the plastic and do the AFF course. You will be doing freefall from the get go - with instructors and camera all the way.


Carltonville was also nice, still running?
I think Wonderboom in Pretoria run 7 days a week.

JSC only ran on weekends when I was there. Regarding the route for courses. The preferred route of starting off with static line jumps before going on to dummy rips and ever increasing delay drops is a whole lot easier on the wallet and you can do it at a pace you're comfortable with. And you need balls of steel to go straight to AFF.

Seriously. Huge steel balls.

when i was there, if i recall you have to do like 5 static jumps before you can do the AFF or something like that
 
Is skydiving more easier/fun than bungy jumping, cause bungy jumping always looked scary to me but sky diving looks peaceful like flying an aeroplane in for a landing from high altitudes.

when u sitting on the edge of the plane by the door before jumping you seriously need to pull it together to get yourself out that door, i suppose it gets easier after doing multiple jumps.

Very possible. I didn't go that route and I don't know of anyone who did. They all went the static line route.

So hard part is trying to get yourself to jump, would you say its more scarier than base jumping or is it less scarier on aeroplane :D

I guess its also easier when you attached to instructor whos in control of the jumping out although I may close my eyes the first one if I went till I got use to it

What would be the point? Sounds like they are milking the okes for extra cash.
AFF is actually safer than static line. Higher is better. Higher=more time
Your time frame for a problem correction from SL altitude is a lot less.

You will experience freefall from the get go on AFF and the first few jumps the instructors hold on to you and make sure you deploy your pilot chute/ or pull it for you.

yeah i reckon tandem will be much easier, when i was sitting on that edge i was considering chickening out serious, but a chick jumped before me so had to man the eff up :D looking back still glad i did it, was awesome but wouldnt just do it again

never base jumped/bungee so wouldnt really know hey. but the ground is a lot closer :D
 
Its worth the price for the DVD as well , i went to Pretoria Skydiving Club and had a great experience.
Maybe contact them for pricing with dvd , i paid about R1700 4 years ago. so probably over R2000 now.

The video and stills were done by another sky diver that jumps out of the plane a few seconds before your tandem , so you get really awesome video and stills.

Other skydiving places offer video as well and may be cheaper but they just strap on a cam to the guy you doing the tandom with so doesn;t look as good.

Yeah Wonderboom makes the whole experience awesome not just the skydive :)

I have a fear of heights here but I dont have the fear when in aeroplanes, always at window seat. Only have fear of heights when near ground like bridges/buildings, would have thought it would have affected me more the higher I got, but seems to be opposite even flew light aircraft for few minutes with a friend in dundee and been in helicopters/gliders/open air microlights :D.

So guess I should do skydiving fine or I guess being strapped in feels comforting :p
 
These guys don't mention any static line jumps before AFF, they in fact don't offer SL jumps any more..

Two-on-one teaching and freefall footage has made AFF the most successful and sought-after method of teaching a student to become a capable skydiver. Jumpers who learnt via the old 'static line' method would have had in the region of 40 jumps before coming close to the skill level that our AFF students are at after only 10 jumps!



On your first jump (Level 1 AFF), you exit the aircraft at 11,000 ft with two instructors, one to each side of you - as well as an OUTSIDE CAMERAPERSON who records the entire jump. The instructors will give you in-air signals, constantly supervising the position of your body and helping you to make the necessary corrections.

Once you have landed your square parachute by yourself, you get a chance to look at the footage with your instructor, who will provide you with a slow-motion playback of his critique.

Their prices for the DVD & stills seem a bit expensive if you ask me.

When I jumped I think they charged about R150 for the dvd & stills. The camera guy had the still camera mounted on his helmet and the video camera in his hand.

I jumped a few times at La Mercy (King Shaka) and only opted for the dvd/stills the first time, sadly the guys had to move to PMB for obvious reasons. La Mercy has awesome views though ;)
