Hi there

I don't know much about VOIP, I would like to get my gran Skype but as in a phone that does it directly, she doesn't have an ADSL line yet so I guess I need to have that installed, do I just get her a phone that does Skype and she plugs it directly into the phone line?

How would I go about doing this?

They were quite expensive the last time I looked, does she not have a PC?

Why does she need ADSL?

If she's not gonna use it that often a capped data package from CellC/Telkom Mobile could be more cost effective.

No, I need it to be as easy to use as possible that's why I need to try and get something that doesn't need her to have a Pc/laptop ect, just the phone, not sure if this is possible though.

Thanks, I guess I'll get this then? http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-za/ph...dsets/rtx-dualphone-4088-black-extra-handset/

Yes I am just thinking of getting a 2GB capped account from an ISP either Mweb or Webafrica at this point, she doesn't have a ADSL line at the moment so will need to get that.

If you have the bucks to spend sure, but ADSL will be double the price.

It will still be too advanced NomNom. It's not just point and phone AFAIK. It's Skype contacts. Skype credits. Skype to Skype and the list goes on.

You will have to preconfigure it and give her some intensive training. I haven't worked on a Skype phone before, but I am pretty sure it's not that user friendly.

:( what else can I try then? she needs to make calls to new zealand and they need to be as cheap as possible.

Thats just a handset, you need http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-za/phones/cordless-router/rtx-dualphone-4088-black/ for base station and handset.

Plus you will need a ADSL line, and ADSL modem and an account.

This all seems a bit over the top just for gran to be able to skype, just get an S3 Mini contract and load skype on it, send to gran and you are up and running for around R200 pm You can even get her a contract on topup so the shark doesn't bite her and then just topup when she needs some more bandwidth.

Does she need to make skype calls or just cheap calls?

In other words, does the person she's contacting have skype?

I think if communicating via Skype without a PC is the ONLY reason for getting ADSL or 3G then surely it would work out cheaper if she got those global international call cards? At the end of the day, unless she is on the phone to them a lot I think the investment and monthly costs will be higher.

I also concur with this idea. Much better solution.

Prepaid data all the way...

Did you forget to add the adsl line?
http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/

Then you still have to add pots rental at about R160 a month now.

As I said in my previous post a Cellc/Telkom mobile deal will be cheaper:

http://www.cellc.co.za/data-specials

That's R119 for 2gigs including the 3G dongle.

R179 is including the line rental I am thinking of getting capped not uncapped, I can't get her 3G because then I need to get a laptop/Pc and she doesn't know how to use them.

There's still POTS line at R160 to add to that.
