Skype for gran?

Just go with skype on a smartphone maybe?

This^^^^

or skype on a tablet with a built-in 3G.

Remove all the icons you know she won't use and you have a user friendly device with large fonts that she can use to do video calls as well if necessary.

Those handset things are kark

Just FYI, Skype on iOS (ipad) works much better than on Android (Nexus 10/HTC One X) in my experience. Video calling is an added bonus over standard fixed line/mobile calls, it's worth the extra cost (besides you can do voice only calls to conserve bandwidth when needed).

Option 1:
Get the family in New Zealand to register a SA number via Skype. (there is a fee)
She calls this number and it reroutes via Skype to them in NZ.
You dont have to teach her any new methods or give her a phone that she will not understand.

Option 2:
Otherwise Cell C for the 99c call rate but it depends on her coverage and whether the Cell C service is any good.

+1

With the added advantage that if the other end has an iPad as well, then Facetime is there as a backup and that "just works"

How about a Galaxy Tab 2 kind of thing, with Skype on? Can even video chat with other software too. And it should be easy enough for the antie to learn.

Hi There,
I would go with the iPad and skype option as a device.
She will find lots of other things that she can use it for e.g. Kindle to read books etc.
Skype works fine on it and if te other party is on skype then there are no additinal costs.
Facetime also works well but you need apple devices at both ends and it also does not do conference calls.
Also not difficult to use as boot up is a piece of cake and the device just works.

Regards

Tim

The iPad is much more user friendly than Android devices. It is pretty tech-idiot proof. I got my 67 year old mom who can't use a computer an iPad and she learned how to use it pretty quickly. She first tried my old galaxy tab and that was never going to work. iOS is more intuitive, and that's coming from an Android phone/tab user.

All subjective.
I got my wife an iPhone 5 as an upgrade to her S2. Lasted 8 hours and I traded it for an S3 (plus cash). She found it totally non intuitive and frustrating.

I got a 64Gb iPod for my car on sat. Still trying to figure out how to get my music on it. On my S4, I just plug it into my computer and copy. Again - not intuitive at all.
When I have some time to Google and read manuals, I will figure it out.

For the price of that handset and base station she could talk for 1900 minutes on her existing phone and then an the additional R200 you would have spent makes for 200 minutes. Most simple option for her.

Depends on how much she would need to speak per month to reach critical mass to justifiy ADSL/Skype. But I think it is awesome if she can speak at her leisure for hours and hours as that would be a good improvement to quality of life that you can't put a price on. Good on you Noms

Ah, you don't have your music in iTunes - if you did, you just drag and drop

Connect iPod to PC (I assume PC) while iTunes is open.

iPod will appear in the information bar on the left - select and drag music from your music library onto the the iPod.

Profit :D

Something up with my iTunes then dude. I only have a little iPod button on the menu bar.
The left shows me music options (genres, playlist, etc..) and the content area all the albums and tracks.

Such cr@p software this iTunes. Is there not a way to sync my music from WMP to the iPod? So much easier there from what I can see (used to sync to USB).

Ah Mike, you're just anti apple products. Your view is pretty clear from your other posts. I've probably owned and played with more different Android tablets and iPads than 99% of people out there considering I've been selling tablets for years and, so my subjective view is pretty spot on when it comes to ou toppies. Android is a nightmare to teach most 60+ year olds. iOS is just generally easier to use for tech-stupid people. I use Android personally (phone + tab) although my computers are mostly macs, so no apple fanboi here.

If you say so dude. I have owned a fair amount of Apple products. Not anti at all. Just know what's good for me. :p

Not sure what all the idjits are going to do now that iOS7 seems to so closely resemble Android. Not played with it myself - just read reviews and comparisons. But if true, seems the idjits are going to need to un-idjit themselves - or something.

Decided to rather go the Skype way and also have the ability to video call.

Thinking of going the ADSL line with 2GB cap from Webafrica for R179pm then getting a iPod Touch.
