Skype frustrations

I use Skype almost every day. Starting yesterday I've got a rather strange problem that required quite a lot of testing and trouble shooting.

So I can only make or receive a call properly after I've just rebooted. If I hang up and make a call right after that the prompt window comes up but there is no ring sound. And the other person doesn't receive a call. When I click hang up nothing happens. The window, which is otherwise responsive and showing it's ringing (but again, no sound). At this point I have to kill skype to get rid of the call window.

When receiving a second call I got the prompt window, hit answer but the window stays on screen and nothing happens. Again I have to kill the program to get rid of the window.

A quick reboot and then once again I can make a call.

Have updated the app. Have logged out and in. Have uninstalled and reinstalled. Have even tried the metro skype app.

My webcam drivers are up to date. Have changed nothing on my system so not sure what has happened. Maybe a windows update in the background (knew I should have left it to manual updates) is clashing?

I'm totally stumped.

Skype is a bit flaky at the moment

Try, untick 'use port 80 and 443' under advanced options and see what happens ...

Uninstall is not good enough. There are still some files left behind, which you should manually find and delete. Something along the lines of CCleaner could help you get rid if the files. Thereafter reboot and reinstall.

Untick didn't help. Uninstalled with cccleaner and reinstalled. The problem is the same. The program just starts selectively not responding after that first call or after the PC has been on for a bit.

The plot thickens. Just plugged my ipod in and same issues. Works when system has just started but itunes becomes unresponsive soon after that.

Should I uninstall the last windows updates?

Uninstalled the windows updates from last week. Problem is still there. Nothing else has been installed except handbrake...guess I'll uninstall that as well. Really clueless as to what is causing this.

The Itunes one is weird. It's perfectly responsive until I go to the "on this ipod" tab and I try and drag a podcast from file explorer to the ipod. The very second the file is hovered over itunes it freezes and is completely unresponsive.

Also ran malwarebytes and all is clear. Argh.

Did a system restore to a week ago and all seems fine now. Guess it confirms it was software but what software? Just need to monitor things closely I guess.

Nope, actually tried to update them when Skype was first failing but apparently they're up to date.

It started happening without skype updating. No, something was clashing with skype and itunes in a very strange but specific way. I still suspect a windows update but it's just a guess. Will only update one at a time now and make sure everything is fine before doing another update.

It's quite possible you have data corruption on your hard drive. I've experienced some weirdness before, and doing a full chkdsk /r, followed by a few reboots, and reinstalling the problematic software and drivers sorted it out. I've got an SSD that doesn't play nicely with my Dell laptop, and causes corruption every now and then. Also had to run sfc /scannow to fix corrupted system files.

It's been perfect since I rolled back. Going to start installing the windows updates pending one by one now and see if one of them was the problem. Will definitely consider chkdsk...maybe on the weekend.

Thanks for the feedback. So often people don't report back and so none of u learn anything new. Aprpeciated.

Good luck with finding the offending code.
