skype impossible or just very expensive?

I have ADSL 192 now for 17 days and I did not succeed to have a skype conversation a single time. I have the SAOL 10 Gb
My neighbour is still on dialup and has better results.
They made me pay the full months amount for the last 6 days of november!
I must admit that I heard some voices but the other side could not hear me
I pay 270+349=619 and installation,had to buy my own modem
In the Netherlands I have a 20 M connection ,no datalimits,no installationfee,free modem,no shaping and bad weather
Should i switch to IS to make skype work?
Can I keep the 192 connection and just move to openweb?
Or do I need 384 or shaped ADSL?
 
Your problem is that the bandwidth is shaped. I have the same problem on my side. You need to get a proxy, an unshaped Saix package or an IS package.

I use skype without any problems, with the openweb/saol 10gigs.
I have a 384, without the openweb socks proxy
 
Maybe try using a mic? hehehe joking

Do the sound set up wizard, read the FAQ on Skype web site, make sure you have the latest audio drivers and the latest Skype (Skype2 Beta you can even use the Web Cam)

I have 10gig from SAOL (Saix) and Skype rocks ... I use it everyday and incidentally it works even better when I call a land line or a cell phone then when I call other Skype users (meaning when I call PC to PC) ....

If you still experience problems, e mail Skype, their response is pretty quick.

Telkom shape the ports, and this has a huge affect on the quality of the VOIP experience, especially on a P2P product like Skype.

I have tested Skype on an Unshaped account (not proxy) and the difference is amazing.

I have also used it successfully on a 384 adsl connection, but the quality is erratic during peek hours.

Something to keep in mind is that your 192 connection is the least powerful connection. Telkom introduced this as a means to get more punch out of their Dslam's. They can get a further reach. But by reaching further the degrade the speed and quality.

Hope the above is accurate and makes sense?
 
It is because of SAIX shaping.

You can try Nukecaps trial PayVPN and see if that fixes your problem.
 
I have a Vonage VOIP phone that connects to my router, it worked perfectly for months, but a few weeks ago it stopped working. I suspect its more than simple shaping, as the box can't even connect to the vonage servers at all. Is it legal for Telkom to block this traffic?

I'm with SAOL at the moment if thats noteworthy.

i had same problem with Skype , when i was on my telkom acc
then we moved . . to anuther suburb and then we ordered mweb instead and it works
 
I really cant understand the problem. I have been using skype for months now on webafrica SAIX (shaped), no problem. occasionaly there is lag, but it's still very good...
 
I too use Skype daily (Iraq and Afghanistan). I'm with WabAfrica, SAIX 384, and, at most, will have very little lag...

I suppose it depends where you are calling. We could not use SkypeOut to a phone in New Zealand as the lag was crazy.

I think this may sound bizarre.....but i think telkom is doing this delibrately....why...i do not know.
 
Like I said I use it on a daily basis to North America and its clear as crystal..
