Skype introduces newest edition

My one and only gripe with skype :) is that they seem to be letting the other operating systems fall by the wayside. I'm sure Linux and Mac users would really appreciate video too.

EDIT - Skype hasnt actually posted the update on their pages yet. :( Its still showing 2.0 as the most recent.

EDIT v2 - it was kindly pointed out that 2.5 is a beta and is shown on the homepage.

Skype is irritating me. They have still not got SkypeIn for SA, their SkypeOut prices for SA are quite a bit higher than Yahoo!Out, and my DualPhone only works with Skype (And even worse, only with Windows). So I have to play this unpleasant waiting game, or write off the cost of the dualphone and get something better

Hows the dualphone? Posted this http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=42531 last night about netgear's new wifi skype phone that looks promising :)

bwana : The dualphone really is amazing. Truly amazing. However, it only works with windows, and I have pretty much moved over to Apple full time. And I dont have a phone line any more (Hence my desire for SkypeIn for SA), so the "dual" aspect of it is no longer usefull to me. The wireless is great though. Just wished they would port their software

About the netgear phone, I think I have read about it before. Doesn't support Mac (Or Linux for that matter) and never plan to

EDIT : Seems it will run with Macs as it is a true wifi phone. If Skype can deliver SkypeIn, I will most certainly buy it. If not, then back to playing the waiting game

I dont think thats too important - It runs off your - or anyone else's for that matter - wifi so you dont even need to have a computer running.

Maybe you can help.

If I call someone with my Dual Phone everything is OK.
If someone calls me I can answer and talk without any problems, but after a short while I get "cut off", which is remedied soon after I push the green button again.
As if the person I am talking to is muted, but clearly they are still connected.

Thanks in advance for any help in this regards. :)

PM sent as well.

okay to start with, get skype 2.0, then upgrade your dualphone software:

http://www.dualphone.co.za/downloads.php

it will upgrade the actual firmware on the phone and base as well. just follow the instructions on that website.

then make sure in skype at the sound device settings you have the dual phone selected.

if it still does this, maby get a headset to test skype on your setup. (line, pc and skype) then if it works with the headset you know its the phone, if it still does the same its propably your connection or something. let me know so i can give some other things to try

Duh - thanks for that :)

dont worry took me a while to figure out also

sometime i wonder if people like myadsl.co.za have someone sitting all daying looking at sites for new stuff coming out. like go between about 20 sites all the time looking for any changes to stuff then report it here. what a boring job it must be... hehe

Got your PM. Thanks.

One more thing.
When answering a Skype Call, must I press the left or the right green button?

Sorry to sound a bit ignorant here as barring a few local calls, the only time I use Skype is to talk to a friend in Adelaide Australia and my brother who works in Baku, which is not often. The Baku connection is often very poor.

Thanks Albert. ;)

hehe the right button is for skype calls, the left one for normal landline calls.

for such little usage the dualphone is a bit extreme? like driving to the shop and back once a month with a ferrari? hehe just a thought, you get a VERY NICE USB phone which works just as good for skype, if not better for like R260. but the dualphone very nice if you have the money :)

albert123 : USB phones miss the crucial factor that make people buy the DualPhone - wireless
People (Well, myself and the few people I know that use Skype) feel stupid sitting in front of their computers to make a phone call

Good point - I'm going to pre-order the Netgear one I think. :D

true, and i agree, but most people, myself included, have my phone next to my desk, so if making a call at work its from your desk, so no point of being wireless. at home its a dif story, but compared buying 30 cordless phones to 30 usb phones. major dif in price.

albert123 : True. Workplace is a different story to home use

For an alternative to dualphone, especially if you already have a cordless (perhaps DECT) telkom phone, then look at the very economical and effective SkypeBox from www.nanoelf.co.za.

It sits between your telkom wall socket, your regular telkom phone (regular or cordless), and your pc (usb connection). Power off the USB bus. Its Skypemate software runs on your pc and interfaces the device with Skype.

Cool features:
- Make Skype calls from your cordless by dialling *NN# where NN is the Skype contact speed-dial
- Shows Skype userid as callerid on your phone - cool!
- Receive Skype and Telkom calls on your handset

Note I'm not affiliated with nanoelf in any way, just a fan of this great product!
