Skype (Local and international)

a got a question for all the VOIP pros and others

could someone confirm that skype uses international bandwidth to make the initial connection and after that uses local (Peer to peer) bandwidth

Also if someone is using a local only connection could they skype to a user that is on a 3G connection (international)

The reason why am asking my work wants to try using skype to speak to Skype Users around south africa, My work has a 12 mb (wireless line) and a 1 mb international line which are on one line (so basically its a 13 mb line(wireless line))

Could we use skype so that we use the 12 mb local for skypeing but use the 1mb international to connection (there are + - 200 Users)

any comments and suggestions are welcome ...

According to Mcafee's website, "Skype is based on a P2P model". For your idea to work you would need a system that can different packet flow from the different connections( local and international connections).

If it can make a direct connection it should use local bandwidth but if it has to go through a supernode then that supernode could be located anywhere.

Skype really sucks now. The skypecasts was so cool. Until they stopped it.

i was surprised to have skype fully functional on telkom local only today. seems like it does not need intl bandwidth to connect.

Skype just needs to get the contact list and IP's internationally, I'm using a local only account that just allows international bandwidth too trickle through, therefore I can log on skype and talk to contacts in SA without problem.

As long as your wireless line shares one IP across the two connections everything will be fine. Users will tunnel over local to talk to local clients, and international to update contact list and call international clients.
