Skype look alike?

Interesting...

Voipbuster has been around for ages

Older than Skype?

Their page is funny: "The free calls phone company... compare our rates"!?

Also... beta release in fine print... how old are they?

They are about the same age as skype. What is funny about that? Their use of english?

Well... implying that they are "free", and then saying "compare our rates" implying that they charge for the service.

Bad English. :p

thisgeek : Well, they have different rates to Skype, with some destinations being free

Actually

Why are they still in beta if they are YEARS old - don't tell me that's normal.

Yeah... agreed

Sounds like a Telkom offer... our free call catcher facility... etc.

Well...

Here's the catch:

" To counter misuse of our network we have limited these free calls to a maximum of 1 minute for our trial users. If you want to enjoy UNLIMITED FREE CALLS to these destinations, you have to become a fully registered user by buying €10,- worth of credit to top up your account. This €10,- credit deposit will remain as long as you are calling the free destinations."

And I got to say - it's not a bad looking catch. Provided their service is good, I am definately going to give it a go - at least for my calls to the US. Wonder how long it will stay free. As long as they don't move operations to Africa, they should be ok - lol.

Well... I will let y'all know how I find it - free landline calls... I gotta see this...

Well...

Preliminary tests were great. I was able to have a good, clear conversation while on a dial-up to the net. It did however crash when I finished the call - happened every time, so a bit buggy, but the call was fine. I have noticed that Skype works better on my dial up than on my regular (throttled) 512k adsl... figures. I'm not sure of the ports involved with VoIPBuster, but i will be mailing the to find out. Haven't tested it on ADSL yet... not bad. It takes a little whilte between sign up and ability to login to the web site to purchase airtime I noticed...

also voipbuster supports SIP and IAX2, users of Asterisk on Linux should be happy. But you will need an unshaped ADSL for it

Yeah...

Agreed - sip is great AND open... unlike Skype. One or two destinations are a little more expensive on VoIPBuster (including SA), but New Zealand and Australia are cheaper - 1.2 euro cents per min as opposed to 2 euro cents per min. And of course, US is free among others. Anyone know what the port setting is under Tools, Options and Advanced? Is it not possible to put an unshaped port in here... excuse my ignorance, I have had no time to read up on this feature.

The New Dailer of our USB Handset support also VoIPBuster Now!

we setup an IAX2/VoipBuster trunk (4 channels, enough for SOHO) on Asterisk@Home over the IS normal ADSL 3G account, results quite happy

US is out of FREE VB destination today, 1 Euro cent per minute
