hi

I know this is an old topic but I was wondering if mtn has implemented their R28 per megabyte rate for Skype calls policy? has anyone suffered from this? I made a Skype call tonight because I had 2 gigs left on my data bundle but now I'm worried I will be charged at the R28 per megabyte rate?

No, it would use your data. MTN cannot charge you unless you went over your 2Gigs

OP is referring to:
VoIP Blocking: MTN and Vodacom clarify their positions (October 2006)
MTN to charge for Skype, MXit (March 2007)

It is still in the Terms & Conditions on their website:
In terms of the current regulatory regime in South Africa, please note that these tariffs and the MTN GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE or 3G technologies may not be used to transfer or generate Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic. Should it be found that VoIP traffic was carried over the MTN network using these tariffs or technologies, MTN reserves the right to cancel the agreement that you have with MTN, with immediate effect. You will also be charged retrospectively at R21.93 per Megabyte (VAT excluded) for any VoIP traffic transferred by such means.

R40 left on my contract- I'm porting in a day or two when it's up :)

CellC prepaid for now, possible move to RBM if coverage & service etc is up to scratch. Sure it's difficult to be any worse than MTN

thanks for the replies!

was so worried.

definitely leaving mtn when my contract is up.

I think you can assume that ALL the networks (not just MTN) are turning a blind eye to VoIP (e.g. Skype) usage. Their T&Cs would technically allow them to charge, but the bad PR would be devastating.
