Already got my UK number - came with free voicemail too. My only gripe is that they haven't released an OsX version which supports SkypeIn so I'm stuck using it on my windoze machine for now. Hopefullly that will change soon.

Cool! Now all we need is SkypeIn to work in SA... :D

I don't suppose the voicemail can be turned off - without a charge to the caller from the UK? What is the UK prefix (0871 or something?) for the number they gave you, or do you get to choose?

I seriously think we need to speak to Skype & other free VoIP providers about a possible need for a local Skype solution/server (due to capped ADSL accounts), or otherwise put in a complaint to both ICASA & ASASA that the connection portion (at least & supported by evidentiary testing) of a Skype call from a capped ADSL account does not work. If/when I get ADSL I will be trying to use Skype & SkypeOut as much as possible.

I doub't we could get Telkom to uncap the Skpe ports so maby the whole forum as a whole should send a letter to Skpe requesting for a local server

Will do that right now! We should all do that! Do it now! Go! Go! Go!

;)

IC - the prefix I got was London (0207) so its a standard number and not sharecall. USA numbers you get to choose from various popular states. The voicemail can be disabled if thats the way you want it.

I agree - once you're capped skype becomes useless. There is no single or set of skype ports as far as I know though so telkom would have to drop the capping unless skype came to SA.

Ok, my brother is in London so that'd be ok for him to call (except he's coming back at the end of the year), as for other friends & family scattered about England & Scotland - knowing them they would still moan about calling a London# - those be the Internet challenged that so far have resisted attempts to be assimilated by off-peak Skype-age...

How does SkypeIn and Skype out work?

Hi

I have been using Skype for a while now and love it. I travel alot and spend alot of time in the US. It has never been cheaper to phone home!

I am just curious exactly how skype out works. I think I get the peer to peer part of normal skype. But how exactly does it break out into the PSTN. For example if I am in the US calling SA where exactly does it break out into the Telkom net work. Does this happen in SA or somewhere else...

Just curious!

a local skype server would definitely solve MY problem i.e. the fact that using skype to phone SA numbers is pretty much useless (on MyWi) b/c the quality is so poor. If skype could get that right, i would hardly even use my cellphone anymore and they would get all my business.
and SA seems to be a very gratefull market, everybody is looking for an affordable, decent solution and if it f**** telkom over that's a bonus.

Just done that as well & got the confirmation email to show off:
Hi,

Thank you for your interest in Skype. We are reviewing your enquiry
and the appropriate person from the Business Development team will get
back to you shortly. We are currently taking between 10 and 15 days to
evaluate proposals – thanks for your patience.

Best Regards,
The Skype Team
Telkomsuig, I am also curious to know the nitty-gritty stuff behind SkypeOut - especially where certain bottlenecks can cause problems from time2time.

Umm...unfortunatly you are

Telkom owns ALL bandwith in South Africa. You are just giving them less than before..

And that's exactly my plan - give Telkomonopoly less than before.

I wonder if Afrihost would be interested in hosting a local SA Skype + SkypeOut & possibly SkypeIn server...?

As requested, a poll has been added to this threat.

Regards
Antowan

A Skypein server would have to be able to allocate telephone numbers so I'm not sure how agreeable Telskum would be to that idea. A dedicated skype server would be great esp with the cap.

Hopefully this will change with the new bill (looks like they are punting a national number database). But I won't hold my breath....
