Skype to be shaped by Telkom

ICASA doesn't have the balls to fine anybody but wireless companies ..... Icasa is just as weak as our minister of telecomunications.

Only thing that speaks to telkom is money. I say a mass move from saix to IS will open their zeyes
 
ADSL is like pocket change for them, they would hardly be affected to the degree that we would like. their main cash cow is diginet and POTS. ADSL subscriptions probably covered $izwe's salary alone :rolleyes:
 
Ye, well, Telkom is not alone. Some ******* company in the States called Verso is pioneering this stuff, and they actually think they're doing a good thing.
Verso CEO Monty Bannerman, founding CTO of the NAP of Americas, says service providers are gung-ho about his new product offering. As a "free" service, Skype is raiding the business model of service providers that want to roll out VoIP services for their customers. "They're all telling me they hate Skype and they're telling me that they want to do something about Skype," said Bannerman in a telephone interview. "If you have something in your network that is costing you money and raiding your business model, I assure you you're going to do something about it."

whoa guys....this is good!!!!!

Joe Public doesn't really care that the gamer or "abusers" are getting shafted by Telkom with their capping policies BUT , by golly, if you take their Skype away - which a LOT of people use, espescially in business - then you know there will be an outcry!!

So, tell everyone that Telkom is planning to shape Skype and then see how more people become aware of Telkoms despicable "broadband" policy....
 
nic makes a good point there. Get the sheep bleating, and the shepherd might wake the hell up.

Sure but there is some commercial packages, dont know what ports they use, and some company's that sell VoIP hardware. I do not think Telkom would target their products for fear of litigation. Telkom want to Kill, or rather is already killing, Free VoIP like skype and others. Maybe we will have to send data to skype to counteract this problem.

No, I'm pretty sure skype can use any port. But doen't realy matter, because they're not port shaping.

I suggest the word 'unusable' instead of 'shape' - I doubt most end users have a technical understanding of what shape/shaping means...

I am just doing that. For the last few Hours I been sending e-mails to every Skype or VoIP company I can find locally as well as skype internationally. Even if nothing comes of it I will feel better after such a bad broadband trip since 1 Oct and especially today. Called Telkom about the problems and they really peed me off. So action will be the name off the game.

I agree They are vouching for huge upheave now !! Hope they get it. Will do my best to help them get shafted

So expect your Skype to go pear shaped. Im sure this is anti competive behaviour. I run a skype phone at home (cheaper prices, and i dont suffer from a degraded service), so this is going to effect me.

I have a friend in Telkom who mentioned this to me a month ago. He said they are still some time from implementation, but it is definitely true.

At the broadband shootout a couple of months ago Telkom said they are all for VOIP, but they referred to their own efforts of course.

There are a lot of tolaking on this forum, but what can we really do? Does anyone know? Rpm, you have the contacts. Who should we talk to that has some clout?

I tried it Got no answer Yet. last night I have send as many mails I could to Skype bussiness related suppliers, resellers and hosting services, to inform them. Will continue doing for a while and see if it works. South African attitudes make me doubt it.
 
The only hope is that the "good guys" ie telkom has a lot less people (and IQ points) avaliable to "combat the crime" that is Skype "bad guys" .... so hopefully the skype kids will beat this as the shaping/blocking is not only an SA issue.

On the other hand intentionally blocking competing products is against the anti-monopoly laws .... but telkom really do care about those ...

Thanks for the heads up. Telkom cannot survive with these tactics forever and it’s a matter of time before something gets done. Great to see people getting revved up about it and guess we all have our part to play in putting the pressure on for change. They are effectively driving away business – ****** provides our internet access, they work with IS for their ADSL connections so nice to know that Telkom’s tactics cannot affect all connections.

Please let us know if you hear any further news. We will send an email out to our database to try rally further support.

VoIP

Whether port- or packet-shaping... I have been using VoIP and Skype since the beginning of this year and the quality is detoriating rapidly since a month or so. My partners overseas hear me crystalclear - I get them at very poor quality with a lot of jitter and lost packages. I'm using 1Mb ADSL and download speed is around 100KB/sec but speed tests for VoIP are near zero whereas a few months ago they were excellent. I think they have implemented some VoIP shaping already.

definately same problem over here, they can hear me properly but me not them.
I used to skype nearly every day no problem but lately its been unusable
