Hi all. I was just wondering which is cheaper between the following apps. Firstly im using a iPhone 2G - NOT WIRELESS.

Heres the scenario:
1. iPhone 2G connected with EDGE
2. Make call to another cellphone with the apps installed.
3. Call lasts 30mins

Based on the above using Skype, Fring, MSN, Gtalk, Nimbuzz or whatever buzz, please can someone lemme know which would be the cheapest as apposed to Vodacoms TopUp charges.

Hi Shardie,

Before you compare price, you also need to see if any can give you adequate quality. I find VOIP over 3G (or EDGE) to be often unusable. I use a Nokia E65 with Fring 3.35 (I avoided 3.36 because of negative comment on Fring's Forum). I get the best quality from the Nokia SIP/VOIP application, over WiFi from ADSL. I have also tried using Nimbuzz, but it hangs on my phone.

In terms of price, if both clients are using Skype or one of the Fring/Nimbuzz community applications, you will pay nothing for the call, just the data costs for both calling and called cellphone. Depending on your Vodacom plan this is usually very cheap compared to a voice call.

I am surprised that more people aren't using the Nokia E and N series phones with built in VOIP client for SIP calls. I have an account from Mweb Webcall and it is very convenient to place SIP (cheap) calls from my cellphone whenever I am at a WiFi point.

A friend called me from his phone using Skype on Fring, the call lasted 10 minutes and cost approximately R1.50-ish for him and give or take the same for me. The call quality was more than adequate...
