How much bandwith do one require for Skype?

And is there an issue with shaping?

Any recomendation on a ISP?

Thanks

I've used SAIX and IS for skype and SAIX wins hands down.

Best idea might be to get a 1gb payg account that doesnt expire.

I'm not sure if the above includes video - I'm thinking not.

I get approx 22kbps up and down when using Skype to dialup and SkypeOut to fixed line telco's.

Voipcheap uses 64-55kbps up and down though for calls to telco's.
(that's with the setting for broadband disabled)

Video not included.

I'm using a 1Mbps connection.

Ok. Thanks. I use ADSL but don't but that's about it..... Which ISP sell accounts with SAIX as backbone?

I'm not a Voip user myself - but if you've got 512+kbps it should be sufficient. I would recommend ADSL over wireless connection 'cause of the lower latency (time delay). 3G etc. transmit in bursts (thats why you can't actually download @ 1.2Mbps - it's just a temp. peak value).

Check for an ISP that uses SAIX backbone ( IS uses satellites which is bad - the latency thing ).

Footnote: Should you decide using a cellular provider, keep in mind that MTN (and Nashua I believe) have a 'clause' charging Voip data @R25 p/MB. They don't actually enforce it - but it's there, and they could......the you would have to sell your house :)

Try Axxess or WebAfrica - they both offer pay as you go accounts.

Thanks. Last question. I take it that one needs to apply with them directly for the ADSL line 2? Or still with Telkom?

I think either but Axxess might not be accepting applications atm.

Either way works. Web Africa has DSL Complete packages that include adsl line rental.

I'd go the Telkom route for the line rental. The ISPs are a bit powerless atm to get Telkom to move its @ss.

Checked their website - A DSL Bronze complete account with 1 Gig will set you back R199. It's shaped. But can that be inclusive of the Telkom line rental?

Why dont you use a BW monitoring program and measure it yourself. ;)

I thought someone might be able to tell me quicker...Like 22k/sec for voice only and x for video...

So I know whether or not to go out and buy a webcam...

I take it if it's 40kb/sec that means that to send and receive video you double that then??
