Any idea when the Android 9.0 update is being released?

It's easier to give a status than a precise date. There are 5 open issues on the Android 9.0 build which need to be closed out before going for Google certification. These could take up to a couple of weeks to close, and Google certification can take 1-2 months.

We'd really hope it doesn't take that long - in fact we have a pretty hard deadline of the end of the year. All things being equal, we should have it done well before then.

We're trying to be quite careful not to release broken or buggy software. We'd rather have a delayed release than a bunch of problems after release.

The major bug has been squashed as of this weekend's testing. We're currently in discussions with the chipset vendor about variable refresh rate support in Android P. So far, we aren't winning with that one; they feel it is confusing for the user. Chances are we'll go to certification soon, sadly with no Netflix, Amazon Prime or variable refresh rates.

External disk read/write support appears to be an Android issue - app developers may need to catch up, but we're just confirming it. Apart from that everything looks healthy.

We can only confirm any DStv Now related issues after certification, so if that's not all clear we may have to live with another delay.

You really got me interested when saying this on 22 August and now your saying you are having discussions with the chipset vendor.... Did you test and fail, or not test at all?

We found it was not working as expected - that is to say it would not switch correctly through common apps. Our investigations lead us to discussions with the chipset vendor who indicated it is not supported and has been removed from their SDK.

Perhaps for clarity - it was expected to work, based on references in the documentation and code, and traces indicated it was attempting to switch. We initially thought this was a bug and not a removed feature.

I honestly can't believe that manufacturers do not see the importance of this feature. I mean, who in their right minds like it to watch a movie with judder. Everyone wants a smooth video experience.

I give up with these amlogic boxes.

But I do agree - if you want something that is fairly niche, you may need to fork out and just get the real deal.

The main reason that I did not fork out the 5k for a Shield or a MiBox yet is because of optical out support. It's a rarity to find a decent box with an optical output. Except if someone can steer me in the right direction.

Mi-Box has optical output via an adapter, the red light at rear is the spot to plug it in ...

We do recognise the demand for variable refresh rate support, but we are sadly not able to move the chipset vendor on what they see as a very niche feature.
