Sleep Apnea - CPAP machine

Hi, stumble upon this thread when researching new CPA machines, I have been using mine for over 2 years now, it is a Respironics M series and I use a full facial mask because I find it difficult to control my breathing through my nose only, I have problems with leakage but have become very use to the machine and the only side effect I suffer is a dry mouth in the morning. Over the past weekend I think I got some water from the humidifier into the machine because when I woke up the machine was upside down. Now the machine switches on at will, it is out of warrant so now I am looking at getting a new one, is the Respironics CPAP machine the best on the market or is there something better? Another question, how does one keep the mask on for the duration of the night without it falling off, quite a few mornings I'd wake up to find the mask laying beside me?
Glad to know that this is not a mysterious problem that has a few sufferers and nobody else knows about it. It was embarrassing falling asleep at work and snoring so loud, must say the CPAP machine made a world of difference. :)

Just writing the post the other night made me speak to other people about it and I found a dentist in the Sandton area that has developed his own MAD because he suffers from osa himself! Got an appointment today and he will have it ready for me by wednesday. Med aid does not cover it but it might be worth a try- he said it also might help not swallow the air if used together with the cpap too. Will keep you posted!

Old thread, but worthwhile.

I was diagnosed with OSA earlier this year. My Psychiatrist was actually the person to guide me on the correct path. I won't go in too much detail.
The main concern is now, I can't afford to pay upfront cash for a brand new CPAP machine, it's just too expensive. My doctor was able to lend me a second hand CPAP machine, but it doesn't have a humidifier, which sort of defeats the purpose. I can't use it. It's too hectic and dries me out like a desert and thus I can't even use the machine for 10 minutes.

So if anyone has a cheap/affordable, portable CPAP they want to get rid of, please PM me. Or if you know someone I could contact.

Shotness :)

Hi

I need advice on choosing a cpap machine and mask. I have been advised by sales reps but I am sure they biased in their opinions.
I was diagnosed a month ago and would appreciate your honest opinions.

Thanks

I'm interested in what effect apnea has on sufferers.

I've had it for years, as has my father and we both sleep very well, it's never bothered me.

I've had sleep apnoea for many years but it's only now starting to impact me seriously. I snore (VERY badly) but I have always generally slept through the night without waking up...until lately

It's gotten to the point where I'm involuntarily falling asleep while driving and at work. I'm constantly exhausted which makes me bad tempered. My kidneys are starting to go, I'm urinating up to 6-7 times per night (dark, strong smelling urine) regardless of the amount of water I drink. I can't manage my weight (I've always been a little overweight but lately, regardless of my eating habits my weight is going up and I can't lose it) because when your body can't get past phase 3 sleep it cannot renew/repair itself. The enzymes in my stomach aren't being replaced/managed by my body correctly which is also causing me to have chronic heartburn....etc...etc...etc...

I were recently diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and were advised to get a CPAP machine that forces air at a certain pressure into your airways to keep it open. Under Obstructive SLeep Apnea the airway in the back of your airway collapses causing you to stop breathing and sometimes it also causes you to snore.

But sleeping with this machine is terribly uncomfortable. A machine blows air through a pipe into a mask that covers my nose and mouth.

I've had a machine on loan for a week and tomorrow I have to take it back and decide wether to buy one of these. It costs about R11 000 (a machine that senses and varies the air pressure) + R2100 for the face mask. Or R6500 (machine that is preset to supply a certain air pressure) + R2100 for the face mask.

I have yet been unable to sleep with the thing. Who has one of these and do you think I should push through with this thing?

Hi. incidently have one that I am selling. I need to upgrade and the income generated will go towards the medical aid shortfall. This machine realy works, but I am keeping my musk for higienic reasons.

Hi
I know this is an old Thread but i have found it very useful. I am just struggling with finding a cheap or inexpensive machine.

The cheapest price I have found is here: http://www.ackermanshealth.co.za/images/cpapprices.html

I am still waiting to hear from SSEM, I dont know why places don't just list the prices. If anybody found a cheaper supplier or a "newish" price list for the SSEM devices, it would be much appreciated.

I took to mine in 2 weeks, though I had no sleep lab set it up. I bought it on gumtree and googled the for the physician's manual and adjusted it until it felt most comfortable. My medical aid will not pay for squat and I cant afford R11000 for the machine and R17500 for the sleeplab - done by interns of all people at the Joburg medical school.

I had it bad, fell asleep standing up in a moving bus. At my desk, while on the phone or typing. The worse was the ridicule from people when I fell asleep in company and did not even notice it myself.

A doctor friend told me to borrow a machine and test it but I opted just to buy the damn thing and get it over with. I do struggle at times as my machine is older so no humidifier.

My main issue is with the mask straps. I have now made my own using sewing elastic strip with a cushion that it slides through as the straps cut into my neck. I was getting rashes until I put the pillow material piece in so it kind of breathes.

I use a full face mask as the 2 nasal masks I have, though much more comfortable, leaves me with severe dry mouth and sore throat as the air "escapes" through my mouth.

I have been using it for 3 years and 6 months now and I now can not sleep without it. The worst thing for me is if the power goes out and the air stops... Its like someone reversed the air and sucked all the air out, a real scary wakeup call.

My mantra for this: You do not know how badly you sleep until that one night that you sleep good.

Stockings work quite well. They’re stretchy and also allow the skin to breathe.

I got my Airsense 10 last week Wednesday, still getting used to the full facemask. Also battling with a bloated stomach in the mornings :-(

Can't believe that Resmed haven't made their app available here that lets you see how many episodes you have a night etc.

Try using Sleepyhead. https://sleepyhead.jedimark.net

And for advice on how to interpret the data, cpaptalk.com is your best bet. It can get a bit hairy in there (although last time I was in there they were talking about doing some moderation), but there is no restriction on people offering advice as there is on most other cpap forums.

Great will do thanks.

Yeah I left all the cpap forums, crap that was being spewed out was ridiculous.

Managed to register on the Resmed Myair site, looks like the Airsense 10 comes from the UK.
