Is the Internet keeping you up way past your bedtime? The good news is that you may only need 6.5 hours of sleep a night so another hour or so of World of Warcraft is not going to break the bank.
Conventional wisdom has told us that an adult human needs 8 hours of sleep a night but findings from the Scripps Clinic Sleep Centre reveals that the optimal hours per night is somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5 hours.
Daniel Kripke, co-director of research at the Scripps Clinic Sleep Center in La Jolla, California has studied the relationship between death rates and the number of hours people sleep a night.
Contrary to popular belief the magic number is not 8.
“There is just as much risk associated with sleeping too long as with sleeping too short. The big surprise is that long sleep seems to start at 8 hr. Sleeping 8.5 hr. might really be a little worse than sleeping 5 hr,” notes Kripke.
Kripke also suggests that people suffering from insomnia get out of bed and do something when they can’t sleep, rather than remain in bed worrying about their inability to sleep.
“Oddly enough, a lot of the problem [of insomnia] is lying in bed awake, worrying about it,” said Kripke.
So if your gaming or Internet habits are cutting into your 8 hours of shut eye, no need to stress, you now officially have permission from the doc for an extension.
