argh! why is my connection so slow?!

guys! come on! you're killing me here! what is happening?!

the weekend i was getting SUCH good speeds, now it's so slow that my pages are timing out and i'm getting HORRID pings on StarWarsGalaxies (from 400ms down to 1200ms!)

i connect to tower 82 from Randpark Ridge via a 256k (hmpf) connection with good signal(3 lights)

I was getting SUCH good speed this weekend and now it's kaput!

when is this problem going to be sorted out?

just a thought... use it... don't use it

I hope you enjoyed the weekend because you were surfing on the bandwith that was stolen from us Tshwane people.

bah-humbug!

if they can just make it the way it was before the "optimisation" - i'll be happy.

and you can have your bandwidth back...

just a thought... use it... don't use it

I've also found my internet is a bit slow... and sometimes it doesn't load the page ("cannot be displayed") on the first attempt, or doesn't load all the images.

Wierd.

having that problem as well donovan. where it wouldn't load the page the first time around, and when i refresh, it loads it.

greedyfly had a valid point - is there something wonky with Sentech's transparent proxy?

basically: don't know. don't care... i would just like my connection back... [V]

ChemicalX take a chill pill. Those ping times to google are quite normal. In fact, that's what anyone in this country gets to google. The large delay is due to the many hops to google.

Here's a typical ping to google via DSL, and even a large ISP's backbone:

5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 443.2/464.1/504.2 ms

And cnn.com ISN'T pingable, AT ALL. Ever. OK? So give it a break. Try and trace the route to your SWG server. See where the holdup is. You'll probably find that the 1200ms doens't come from the first few hops, which is the part Sentech has control over.

Be realistic. This is the internet. Not the ****ing information superhighway. Yes, I've seen a decline in the amount of available bandwidth too. But that's just normal for the "shared" service you signed up for.

Hey...chemicalX. If you're in Randpark Ridge (where I am), why are you connecting to tower 82. You should be connecting to tower 12 which is the Mintek Tower in Strijdom Park, which after the optimizations, has improved quite considerably. 82 is Metro Centre, and is a little bit further than tower 12

Yup, we're on a 256k leased line at work. Average ping to google is 370 ms with more than 20 hops.

rodent.

i'm not EXPECTING the ****ing information superhighway - i'm expecting the connection I had the night before last.

greedyfly did the SAME ping from pta, and got HALF the milliseconds I got. on a freakin' 128k connection. I have a 256k connection!!!!

i didn't know that CNN wasn't pingable - ****! sue me!!! we're not all as clued up as you Rodent, keep that in mind before you start flaming people left right and center!

My connection was fine on Wednesday night, it was farked last night. something is busted somewhere. I'm not expecting miracles ,but I expect a connection that I can actually use - and last night I couldn't use it!!!

i should add this to my signature - "if you aren't going to help me with CONSTRUCTIVE feedback or anything I can use, get the hell out of my face!!"

I'm SICK of you clued up guys looking down on others just because we don't know everything - get over yourself!

[:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!]

okay. now... let me talk to the people that are actually willing to have decent conversations...

aftermath. dunno why i'm connecting to 82, i've always connected to it. in the past 12 was useless to me - the speed was horrid. 82 is fine, WHEN it works...

82 -- Well that may not neccesarily be Randburg.

Depending on your exact location you may just be connecting to 82 - Radiokop.

Maybe have a look at Nic Roet's good page: http://rational.co.za/MyWireless/calculate.html

We did tell you that excess packet loss will make Sentech useless for games, this is just a flaw in the technology. swearing wont fix it.

As has been plainly stated, it's a shared service. Conditions change. That's what you signed up for. Just because your SWG doesn't work anymore doesn't mean the service is inoperable.

Having 256k doesn't make ANY difference to your latency. A bigger pipe does not equal better latency. You're not comparing apples with apples here, either. If you took your modem to greedyfly's location, and did the same things from his location, then perhaps we'd be comparing apples with apples here. This kind of statement shouldn't be made without at least a little bit of knowledge about how bandwidth works. There's a vast difference between latency and bandwidth. One is != the other.

If you want me to flame, I can start. But when I hear you talking about a topic you're clearly out of your depth, then I am going to correct you. That does not constitute a flame though. When you post on this forums with angry smilies though, complaining about timeouts pinging to CNN, then perhaps you should have confirmed it before blaming it on Sentech.

Wait a minute. We're talking about the guy here that spammed these forums for weeks about his inability to get ICS configured on his 2 PC's. And then, when he couldn't do that, struggled to get it going on _standalone_ PC's. And then when it worked exclaimed "It's a miracle".

Forgive me if I don't really believe in your "subjective" technically capable opinions of the service...

Perhaps you should change that to: "if you aren't going to help me with FREE CONSTRUCTIVE feedback or anything I can use, get the hell out of my face!!". Free feedback is just that. FREE. Good or Bad. Take it or go whine at the helpdesk.

If you'd like an excuse, try the BOFH excuse generator. We sure as hell don't know. If you want an official answer, ask Sentech. Why do you ask ARBITRARY questions like that here? This is the Sentech discussion forum, not the frigging Sentech helpdesk. We can't tell you what's going on, and even if ProAsm might reply it's hardly the official line...

I really think you should take your PC back to the place you bought it from and ask them for a refund. If they ask "But why?", tell them "I'm too stupid to own a computer". And quite honestly, unless you're a Microsoft Access programmer, I don't believe that statement of your occupation either. I know 15 year old gamers with more PC-Fu than you.

That last statement, FYI was an unadulterated flame... Feel free to flame back. I think I can handle it.

To turn your own statement around on you: "if you aren't going to be cluefull enough to provide enough USEFULL debugging information (aside from whining) or anything that actually makes sense, then quit incessantly whining in this forum, or be happy with the FAQ".

Free feedback is just that. FREE. Good or Bad. Take it or go whine at the helpdesk. That's the official channel. Reporting it may actually get something done from Sentech's side. Whining about it here, amounts to nothing.

whatever. i don't have time for childish ****. thought i could get some help on sorting my problems out, that's what these forums are for right, help? or am I too stupid to figure that out as well?

Rodent, 'till today I actually thought that you were one of the guys trying to help on this forum, but you just proved me wrong...

pardon me for being stupid and asking for help...

i'll be moving along then...

cheers - i don't need this crap...

haha, you guys suck [:p]

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?
