Slow ADSL? It could be a DNS Amplification attack

I've been a victim of DNS amplification attack before. Noticed extremely slow speeds, luckily I have a Mikrotik and could trace thousands of DNS requests coming in from a single IP in Saudi Arabia. Simply unticked "Allow remote requests" in the DNS section of my Mikrotik and speeds went back to normal almost instantly.

Interesting.
As a regular home user of ADSL, can a person protect themselves against this (with out a Mikrotik router) or is it up to the ISP?
If so, does anyone know how to using an Airport Extreme?

By the sounds of it no. It seems there a couple hundred people that have malware on their machines (Probably unsecured windows machines) and those machines are flooding the DNS servers with their requests, thereby getting the ISP's to help DoS Spamhaus. As a side effect, this eats up bandwith on the network, causing everyone's adsl to be slow

Updated the firmware on my D-Link 2750U and haven't had an issue since (that was 2 days ago).

I would recommend people update their firmware and make sure security updates are installed on the computer.

I have automatic updates on mine, mines on Firmware Version: AF_1.68_R01. Which is the latest I beleive. I am still having slight net problems.

UPDATE:

Emailed support and apparently their server crashed, but they are back online now.
