Hey everyone

I' actually looking for help or possible solutions. My ADSL since Thursday have gone haywire. My ping and download speeds are spiking very bad. Local ping to Rosebank server is over 200 ms and to CPT server over 390 ms, I 1st complained with my ISP and we quickly investigated that the problem is with Telkom ADSL line.

I then contacted Telkom and had up and down phone calls to them; and they come back to me every time saying that there is no issue on the line. As per Telkom having a 200 ping to Rosebank server is fine.

I have a 4mb line and my ISP is Afrihost, my normal ping to Rosebank was 18 - 20 ms and CPT 45 - 50 ms (using the www.saix.net speed test).

Any advise from anyone? We use the line from gaming (mostly).

Hi There,
Some statistics are really essential to look at this.
Is this also being used as a telephone and if so is the line crystal clear?
You also don't mention if you are on an uncapped or unshaped. It could be that you have hit your fair usage amount.

Regards

Tim

Firstly sorry eXiLed for high-jacking your thread, but I don't want to start a new thread with the same question/problem.

Hi ColGatvol,
Your line stats look OK. How much of the 5GB capped have you used?

Your download speed is pretty much what I am getting on a 1Mb line.

I've used about 67% of my cap. Last month I used all of my cap and got "soft capped", speedtests showed that my line speed decreased to a 384Kb/s line.

Since the beginning of the month my speeds returned to normal but in the last week or so its been bad, really slow. I don't download anything (movies/games/series) since I only have a 5Gb cap, I only surf the web and watch the occasional youtube clips. But webpages open slowly, file downloads sometimes get stuck around 20Kb/s. Last night I downloaded a 10Mb file and it took 18min. Now I know it's not a train smash, but I'm used to downloading at 80-90Kb/s.

Just did another speedtest:

Download Speed: 399 kbps (49.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 276 kbps (34.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 405 ms

I can't remember my exact figures in previous (months') speedtests, but know it was better and my ping was never that high, used to be in the high 100s (160-190).

What exchange(s) are we talking about here?

I have been seeing erratic latency, with bursts of packet loss and high ping making my evening World of Tanks experience less than happy. WoT shows ping during game play, so you can see it as it happens. In addition, I run the free version of PingPlotter to see where the delays are, and I have seen some high pings on the local (in my case, IS) hops.

I logged a case with Telkom, who responded by disconncting my line over the weekend. Now that it's back, the symptoms are the same. Is this perhaps another case of 'exchange congestion'? (I'm on Bryanston, which has suffered congestion in the past)

Hi There moron51,
Could be a congested exchange but then the 2nd ping would be high value. If your IS pings are long then they are not helping you.
colgatvol your current speeds are very close to those of the softcap are you sure you are not being capped? Make a call to your ISP to verify and maybe ask for a day by day analysis of your usage.

Noticed my internet is very fast this morning, had to download some printer drivers and the download finished (suspiciously) fast.

Did a speedtest and everything looks back to normal, just hope it stays that way!!

Download Speed: 866 kbps (108.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 435 kbps (54.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Over the past month there have been a lot of congestion and speed issues raised on this forum.
Hopefully yours and everyone else's issues are now history

Has something specific happened to justify your hope, Tim?

I was still seeing awful latency at lunchtime today, but around 5pm it was back to normal. Fingers crossed...
